  • Craig Ranapia,

The amount of hoohah from right wingers suggests this Standard is causing them some grief?

Well, nanoplanet, I'd like to think sewer rats in the blogisphere would case some grief to anyone with a shred of decency and who thinks political blogs can be a useful and sane contribution to discourse.

There's a reason why I've deleted the overwhelming majority of RSS feeds to American political blogs (left, right and otherwise) from my reader. And in my opinion, this election year is going to be the big test as to whether their domestic equivalents will be going into the same recycle bin.

  • Russell Brown,

Raymond, I'm not sure what you're on about. I doubt anyone who is actually a moderator on the standard would have said that. Feel free to provide a link and prove me wrong.

You're right. The comment is discussed here.

A person called Robert Owen/Robespierre says his son and/or his son's friends posted the comment on his login on Kiwiblog and he thought the ban was fair enough. He's not shown as having moderator privileges.

  • ali bramwell,

Also kept a tally of the Most Offensive t-shirt. Saw a lumpy girl. around 18 years, wearing the slogan "Jesus is a c**t". How do you begin to read that one??

you could start with young women's attitudes to their c**ts.
sometimes the word is not intended as a perjorative. one young woman I met wears a tattoo "niga c**t" on her arm, which for her doesnt imply a self esteem problem.
the shirt could just be a 'god is a woman' kind of thing.

agree its a shade in your face either way, esp for the average godfearing non lesbian. agree the "Get a fuck bitch" example is a bit outside of the friendly advice category too.

...but there is something going on commercially with the pleasures of inane adolescent rebellions, these shirts or others like them are mainstream buying at big franchise outlets like Jay Jays and Hallensteins. proliferating self publishing also coming into play. every young revolutionary or would be comedian with a photoshop editor and an iron on print decal can have their say. plastering their defiantly un PC politics across their heaving bosoms for public delectation. so naughty and sooo brave.

Yes. If they have a bosom. Context makes a difference tho' and I think the gender of the wearer may make a difference to "Get a fuck bitch."

  • Geoff Lealand,

Thanks for these thoughts. There is probably a whole course in social semiotics here.. Does it make a difference that the 'Jesus' slogan was on her back and not on her front?

  • Jen Ferguson,

It was a jolly day - far too bloody hot of course (does it get hotter every year?!), but then I was one of those jammy gits enjoying the lush (read: air-conditioned) environs of the East Stand Lounge in between forays into the wild...

Highlight #1: Arcade Fire; watching the 'sea anenome'-style action of punters' arms to Shihad #2; and LCD Soundsystem will go down as one of those dancefloor moments you remember for life.

Best sight of the day: a peroxided Perez Hilton looky-likey chap in pale pink tights sporting extensive sweatstains from groin to kneebone. Moist gusset! And how! (It remains to be seen whether he got a fuck bitch.)

  • Jim Cathcart,

I'm definitely looking forward to seeing Arcade Fire in Osaka in Feb after the positive reports here. I think my last festival in NZ was a Strawberry Fields when both The Clean and Shihad played. The festival was memorable for the local gang members trying to intimidate our group the morning after they attempted to break into one of the cars. The festival security and police did the very minimum to protect our safety as we tried to leave the site unharmed.

  • Tom Ackroyd,

Man, that drug ad. Hip, up-to-the minute, satirical and original use of a David Attenborough voice. Sure hits the target doesn't it?

I love how E guy is so not smiling, and acid girl has to be having a bad one.

The Guardian is utterly uncritical - just print the press release verbatim; job done.

Where's Chris Morris when we need him?

FYI Russel that drug ad link has an extra " at the end. And the message looks to be that taking drugs will get you invited to the parties with the best looking people. Ah, if only that ad had been around when I was a teenager...

True story: the first words I heard on arrival at the lounge were Jen saying "I don't think the air conditioning's working!"

    Highlight #1: Arcade Fire; watching the 'sea anenome'-style action of punters' arms to Shihad #2;

I've realised with my mate Andy's blog (in which he raves about the Shocking Pinks) that there was a staggering scheduling clash between 6 and 7pm: Arcade Fire, Lady Saw, Shocking Pinks and Battles -- all on at the same time!

And yeah, there was something monumental about Shihad. It was like watching the All Blacks at the top of their game. There was a moment -- where the bass came in after the guitar intro to 'Home Again', and just went BOOM!! -- when I turned to my darling and said "wow", and she said, "wow". You don't sound that good out front without sounding perfect on stage.

and LCD Soundsystem will go down as one of those dancefloor moments you remember for life.

I'm slightly troubled by the fact that there are moments there that other people remember and I don't. I was just a dancing fool, I guess. Damn, they were brilliant.

  • Russell Brown,

FYI Russel that drug ad link has an extra " at the end.

It's weird: the formatting is correct, but the link doesn't work -- it keep picking up the quote mark in the HTML as a character. The URL is, anyway:

    http://www.guardian.co.uk/media/2008/jan/18/advertising.drugsandalcohol

And the message looks to be that taking drugs will get you invited to the parties with the best looking people. Ah, if only that ad had been around when I was a teenager...

Quite. But the messages are fairly good: if you drink lots and smoke pot, you might be sick; if you take LSD and lose track of your friends, you might freak out (OTOH, you might gain valuable insights into the human condition); and if you take ecstasy, for goodness sake, keep yourself modestly hydrated.

Very gracious of you to describe me as a "level two troll", Russell.

No posts from the Standard today. Apparently they've been licking their wounds. Instead, one of its more obnoxious cheerleaders, had http://newzblog.wordpress.com/2008/01/21/pig-fucking/.

  • Rich of Observationz,

I had a look through The Standard and came across this post:

It is worth noting that nearly every piece of legislation protecting New Zealand workers, while supported by Labour, has actually been driven by the Alliance and the Greens. As the Alliance no longer exists I’d suggest voting Green is the best way to truly support Kiwi families...

If they're really Labour funded then I think a demand for money back might be in order.

Quite. It seems fairly clear to me what happened, but the mob is convinced that it's evidence of sweeping corruption.

Interesting, ali, that you've read the room and think an asterisk-less 'cunt' might not go down well. Geoff might have a point about the social semiotics thing, but as a pratical matter I don't think I'll be wearing my 'suck my faggot cock nigger cunt' hoodie to the Otara Markets this weekend. The sistas might not get the transgressive subversion of hegemonic socio-linguistic norms, or the expression of solidarity with the triple oppression minority lesbians suffer in a homophobic, racist and misogynistic society, and decide I'm a cracker prick who needs a good stomping.

  • Richard Bol,

    Re: Jesus Is A C**t.

As a reformed goth I'm guessing that the 18-year old female in question was wearing a t-shirt honouring the terrible goth-metal/unintentional comedy act Cradle of Filth - 'Jesus Is A C**t' is a slogan of theirs.

the shirt could just be a 'god is a woman' kind of thing.

The band's intentions in using 'Jesus Is A C**t' are probably more to do with getting publicity from outraged Christians than questioning the sex of JC, but who knows what their fans' intentions are?

If anyone wants to sample some Cradle of Filth, take a look at the [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OB-3Oy7Y5ow| for their song 'Nymphetamine']. Dunno if it's a tribute to Spinal tap's 'Intravenous De Milo'.

Actually, rich, I know quite a few Labour folks who think the party establishment are waaay too right. But that's a whole other sack full of squirming kittens I don't want to touch 'cause there's more than enough ideologically purist crazy on my side of the fence. Really, how do you react to a hard-right chap who opines that John Key is so wet he might as well be (and I quote) "Helen Clark with a sausage between her legs". Apart from grabbing a heavy object while backing towards the door, that is.

Campaign season is going to interesting in all the wrong ways, I fear.
