Hard News: Music: The Love of Food

I've been in Auckland this weekend and went to the Street Chant EP launch last night. It was so good. A bunch of people crammed into a small room, BYO booze, smokes and more sound and chaos than a three-piece seemed capable of producing. The Blam Blam Blam cover isn't even the best track on the EP. I've been listening to it as I do a bit of exploring around this isthmus of a thousand lovers and it's full of quality tunes.

Exactly how I figured it would be. I kinda had to admit to myself after the Phoenix Foundation finished that even though we had time to get over and catch Street Chant, I'd done very well for a man with a thunderous cold and would be unlikely to cope with the joys of such an environment. I hereby retrospectively declare you as my proxy for the evening.

The stuff they've deemed not good enough for the album is amazing. The last "single", 'Sink', b/w their cover of Wire's 'Outdoor Miner', was great. They're actually a very disciplined group -- witness their recent turn as a backing band for David Saunders.

That track you posted by them is wicked Russell, resonant indeed. I'm looking forward to checking out the rest of the EP after work.

Pretty sure I remember Julia playing that song with Lisa Crawley at Tabac around the release of Modern Fables. Lovely song. Would also really like to hear a remix.
Here it is live in Wellington, from 2011.
Street Chant were indeed ace with David Saunders. Do you think Don McGlashan would front them next?

I was in such a daze I had no idea there was food for us on Wednesday! Sorry about that, I dragged James off to 'Nam for some lemongrass chicken.

On the remix tip, how about Sex Masheen - The Kon Edit of the Godfather hits it for me.

nice work basement tapes - really enjoying the Lorde remixes I've come across - they've been the gateway to me actually listening to her EP, which is often the case with "pop" acts in my world
work found me over at this blog last week and what a lovely range of mixes they have http://hungryhungrymodels.blogspot.co.nz/
