So cruel to have Joel McHale hosting the Emmy announcements and not give anything to Community. Dani Purdu should be up for Best Supporting Actor, at the very least.

Ok - not a happy nice Friday thing - this news (caution: video shows someone being shot in the back and killed) has my back up.
I lived in Oakland for more than a decade, it's still home and to see it facing riots today leaves me horribly conflicted - trying the case with an all-white LA jury just so reeks of Rodney King - I was in the streets for those riots I remember the anger and understand it - but then again there's no reason to destroy our neighbour's homes and shops and cars - no one wins when that happens

On a happier note, here's "The Great Drum'n'Bass Swindle" from London Elektricity through our mates at Hype Music. Terribe title, great tune, especially the Logisitics remix.
Life is beautiful...

I should add that friends with businesses in Oakland are closing right now, battening down the hatches (literally), standing guard, arming themselves (one has her chainsaw out, it's the only thing she has, I've implored her to put it away) ... the problem is that if the cops show up in force it will all turn to (even more) custard
-
Paul: how likely could it happen here in NZ?
-
well our cops (usually) aren't armed .... I guess that claiming you meant to pull your taser and you pulled your pistol instead is probably becoming more plausible this year
(even if people have pics of you already holding your taser minutes before you claimed you pulled it)
I've been involved in a lot of demonstrations over the years - 3/4 of a million against the Iraq war for example - the '81 tour in NZ, .... one thing I'll say for US crowds - there's an awful lot of pent up hostility and anger, things can suddenly turn nasty in a way that I've never seen happen in NZ - we're so much more 'civilised', (mind you I wasn't in Auckland that last day in '81) - on the other hand I've been beaten by the NZ police but not by any US ones.

Friday.
I guess you're either into this or you're not. It's Persian. It's not D&B, but I think it's cool, anyway.
And no guns or tasers...
(Rhythms like Tool.)

And the Emmy noms are in. I'm with The Guardian's writer: what's with the ongoing love affair with Two and a Half Men And why do they hate David Simon?
Two and a Half Men may be a misogynistic pile of shit, but it's (a) enormously popular, and (b) a fairly traditional sitcom. What I don't get is why 30 Rock is still racking up the noms when the last season has been, frankly, dreadful. And Glee, IMO, is seriously over-rewarded for a show that suffers from Ryan Murphy's creative ADHD.
As my favourite tele-blogger Maureen Ryan says, the Emmys have such a solid track record of rewarding mediocrity and snubbing talent that you've just got to say FTW when they occasionally get it right. (And sorry, Wire-heads, I'm go out on a limb and say what I've seen of Treme is not doing it for me.). Not the biggest fan of Friday Night Lights, but Kyle Chandler and Connie Britton have been doing solid award-worthy work all along.

Right, that's it. Handbags at dawn!

WH,
a friend put me on to this recently. the sample is unusual but quite catchy

Oooh, Miss Thing is throwing down! Hold my gold, bitches, I'm going in. :)
Seriously, Friday Night Lights is not my favourite show but I'll happily grant that the cast is excellent (Chandler and Britton's great sin is they deliver under-stated performances rather than showy Emmy bait).
Treme? Meh, there's a lot to admire but David Simon has a didactic streak a mile wide that too often overwhelms the storytelling in a rather unattractive way. The Wire was much more successful in showing rather than telling, and I just hope that next season Treme is going to hit the same sweet spot.

Right it's Friday, so the Emmy's are all very well, but can I land some more music?
Will have to check out the Tracy Thorn. There's so much in the female vocal department at the moment. Still loving Hollie Smith, and Kirsten Morrell's solo album is worthy, but as I may have mentioned earlier, I'm quite looking forward to the release of Julia Deans album, I think on Monday. Got the EP at her gig a while back, and it is pretty damn good, IMhO.
Some previews are on MySpace now.

Emmy noms=cat eating toffee, surely?

It really is a great album. She inhabits the characters of her peers in such an illuminating fashion.

There is! With you on looking forward to the Julia Deans record too. Fur Patrol weren't really my thing, but she's so strong.

You, sir, are the man for girly-disco-drrun-'n'-bass.
Chaps have to share that stuff, you know?

I heard some stuff about the student protests over fee hikes at Berkeley last January that sounded fairly hair-raising (via a colleague whose brother teaches there). Seems like there's sometimes quite a gap between what happens and what gets to the mainstream media - at least the NZ media.
-
Julia Deans, you say...

Speaking of amazing female vocals... in fact just plain amazing vocals:
The Bellbirds are playing at the Auckland Town Hall Concert Chamber tomorrow night... the perfect venue for their Baroque Pop (which is as good a description as I can think of) ...
For those that haven't heard them, there's some video on You Tube of the spellbinding Late At The Museum gig from a couple of months ago.
Yes, I know it's a totally blatant plug for the gig, but there's been bugger-all publicity, and the film festival has probably grabbed all the attention.
Oh yeah, in the interests of disclosure, I am their soundman and so am totally biased. But I've in the 30 years I've been in this industry, I've never seen audiences so captivated. It's damn spooky the way everyone shuts up and actually listens!
The Sami Sisters are supporting too!
