  • Tony Parker,

(In the ongoing 'who does that person look like?'-fest that is my main topic of conversation with my husband, we agreed that one member of Neil's band looked like Nick Lowe and one of his backup singers looked like Christine McVie.)

That's Ben Keith who's been with Neil on and off since Harvest. The woman is Pegi, Neil's wife. My first BDO-hated it as an experience but loved My Morning Jacket and of course Neil. Being on a Neil list I knew what to expect, he has been doing a number of new songs but this setlist was a bit safe with only one new one but the performance was something else. Not bad for a 63 year old. And Mr Brown-saw you checking out Lugar Boa. What did you think?

Tony, can you point me to a setlist for last night?

  • Tony Parker,

I know it sounds geeky but I texted the songs as they happened to a guy in Oz who posted it to the Rust List which then got put on the Sugar Mountain site.
    http://www.sugarmtn.org/years/09nysets.html

    Set List was;
Love And Only Love / Hey Hey, My My / Powderfinger / Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere / Spirit Road / Cortez The Killer / Cinnamon Girl / Oh, Lonesome Me / Mother Earth / The Needle And The Damage Done / Heart Of Gold / Old Man / Get Back To The Country / Cowgirl In The Sand / Just Singing A Song / Rockin' In The Free World // A Day In The Life

Was my 3rd time seeing Neil live, probably the best performance.

  • Rex Widerstrom,

    Kyle Matthews:

They released a list of "one hundred things that you might not have known about the Bush administration".

That's just begging for satire. I'll start:

100: Likes dogs too. In fact, several have been delivered to Dick Cheney's office since he first found he needed a bypass. We're not sure why we've never seen any again, but we're sure he's just cuddling them. And hey, don't be implying anything... he's always eaten his meat raw and piddled on the President's leg.

99: Can finally reveal whole Cindy Sheehan thing was a gag. Income from fried chicken concession on road to 'Western White House' will fund Bush Presidential Library. First shipment of Archie and Jughead comics already ordered.

And that's why Hamas takes such pains only to aim rockets at military targets

The Israelis complain endlessly about how 'indiscriminate' the Hamas rockets are because they cannot be targeted. Which makes the above either manifestly ignorant, deeply biased or just callously indifferent.

I'd read about 'Just Singing a Song' but never heard it. A gather some long-term fans have been complaining about his most recent work, but that's a good song!

Reasonable-quality version from late 08 here:

And Mr Brown-saw you checking out Lugar Boa. What did you think?

Pretty good, actually. If I didn't already know, I think I could have picked that Jimmy is a Saints fan.

  • Russell Brown,

Say it ain't so? They and TVotR were my biggest regrets for yet another Pete BDO no show. I heard that the TVotR sound mix was munged but Pendulum rocked arse?

Don't listen to Danielle: Pendulum was an event. I wouldn't want a whole day of that, but as part of the rich tapestry of sounds of a BDO, it did the trick for me.

TVotR were underwhelming, thanks to the sound problems and the fairly massive drain of energy from the stadium as the Pendulum fans poured out and up the steps.

Yeah, it was an 'event', but not all events in life are, you know, actually enjoyable. :)

(I also really really hate bands who yell variants on 'you having a good time? Let me hear you!', etcetera, between every song, and they did that. Which didn't help. If I'm having a good time, I'll let you know without prodding, thanks. I am crotchety and old. Ha.)

Ok , that was probably why the folk I was with weren't impressed with TV on the Radio (old, opinionated, sound guys ) but I reckon up the back of Bfm delivered quite... well..... well. Trees made for a good setting for quiet time and table and views for good look at main stages and quick delivery to front when needed. I came away thinking alot of the bands had good and bad parts but happily accepted that, that is the way the cookie crumbles, but Neil was the bestest and I expected that and was happy ,happy, joy, joy.

  • Steve Barnes,

    @ Danielle
I looked at Fatima's, I should have purchased some eatables there but my desire was for a burger. I don't know why but it just seemed so Big Day Out, to have ketchup running down my chin. I first offered my custom to one of those permanent kiosks behind the main stand, you know, that area that is always flooded with dubious liquids during large musical events at Ericsson Stadium. The pattie was kinda pink in the middle and came pre cooked, pre wrapped, pre digested and smothered in BBQ sauce from an undefined source. It was crap. Undeturd, I acquired a second example of sub-prime cuisine from the deceptively named "Gourmet something" (can't recall the second word) right up the back by the "Summut" bar. The bacon and chicken burger sounded good but my heart sank on seeing it being prepared. Warm, pre cooked chicken was slapped on the black and debris covered hotplate with a bit of pre fried bacon and half a bun to keep it company. The whole lot was whisked around with a greasy spatula for what seemed like seconds, doesn't time fly when you're having fun? slapped on the remaining half of the bun with a bit of limp lettuce and slipped into a plastic bowl. Gourmet indeed.
Needless to say, it was almost up to the standard of the previous endeavour which was now entering that part of the digestive system that makes those warning noises before the cramps set in. I was ready to dance the fandango with the Arctic Monkeys.
As I tripped, almost literally, down the steps to the main arena. Luckily I was afforded the welcoming vista of a row of portaloos.
Well, Andin from britz. You may well say "If you think the life of another human being is worthless you deserve to get the shits." I hope you were the guy behind me in that interminable queue.
    Neil was good though.
    ;-)

  • Sacha,

I'm glad to hear BDO was (mostly) enjoyable and that none of you succumbed to sunstroke.

having to pay $130 to be treated like a cross between cattle and refugees grates a little

I think I was agreeing with Steve upthread - the contrast after attending the superbly organised Gathering only a few weeks beforehand really put me off the BDO. It does sound like restricting crowd numbers paid off this time, so big ups to the organisers for foregoing the extra $500k income.

    Pendulum was an event

I've seen them described as the stadium rock of drum'n'bass and I can imagine tracks like "Fasten Your Seatbelt" working well in a large crowd (though the forced exhortations bring to mind a cheesy aerobics instructor). Anyway, imagine way more bass:

    and the studio version:

    Ahhh, memories.
I remember being at a gig at the Powerstation, years back, when the singer of songs, not Wane Anderson, yelled out "Hello Wellington" there were one or two "WHOO HOO"s and a lot of silence. You could see the confusion on the poor guy's face from the top bar.

  • Steve Barnes,

So's you don'thave to read all of his vile shite.

Israel and its neighbours are, after all, on the other side of the world, and I doubt whether one Kiwi in 100 gives a damn about what goes on there, let alone takes sides.

Nor should the Government. It has enough on its plate in dealing with pressing domestic issues, and the last thing it needs is to be distracted by what is, after all, just another bit of biff in an eternal hotspot.

  • Simon Grigg,

    Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere

Obscure NZ connection: I wonder if Neil's aware that a very big band (at the time), Human Instinct covered this song, pretty much note for note, as a single and on their album Burning Up Years in 1969 but thought they they could get away with changing it's name and crediting it to one Jessie Harper.

Maybe they thought no-one would notice.

Just another klong... • Since Nov 2006 • 3284 posts Report

  • Steve Barnes,

The Human Instinct secured a role as resident band at Auckland’s Bo Peep Club, then abandoned the gig to return to Britain in February 1969, where they invested in a massive PA and lighting system to blow audiences away. They remained there for three months, during which time they met New Zealand guitarist Jesse Harper (real name Doug Jerebine), who was to contribute seven songs to the band’s first three albums.

On their return home they were signed by Pye Records and entered Stebbing Studios to record their first blues-based album, Burning Up Years, which was released in late 1969. Three of the album’s seven songs were Harper compositions; one was Greer’s. (Another song, the A-side of their first single, "I Think I’ll Go Back Home", was a blues version of Neil Young’s "Everybody Knows This is Nowhere", but wrongly credited to Harper).

    From Here
    Does that clear it up?

  • Simon Grigg,

    Does that clear it up?

Except that they recorded it, released it as a single and then released it on the album a bit later, mistake intact. I asked Maurice Greer once about it a few years later and he just laughed.

So. A mistake? or blatant copyright infringement? Did Harper pass it of as one of his own and Greer was duped?
