  • Martin Lindberg, in reply to Richard Grevers,

Talking of earworms, Nothing Compares 2 U was mine the other day - totally out of the blue.

Weird, I found myself humming a song the other day that I had no idea where it came from. The supermarket or the service station maybe. In the end I had to look up who did actually sing it. To my horror it was this song by Cat Stevens.

    I'm not a fan.

  • Scott Chris,

    Be Afraid!

Problem is, having not heard it for so long, I actually rather enjoyed it.

  • Geoff Lealand, in reply to Peter Darlington,

Oh, Peter. How can you possibly say that about Arcade Fire???

I think there is quite enough to wince over already but if you reassess some older music, it just doesn't sound as it good as we once thought it was. Janis Joplin, for instance. Bellowing rather than singing.

What about alt.country, Jackie? A different kettle of country fish ie Lucinda Williams. Wilco, Steve Earle etc. Currently reading an MA thesis from VUW about alt.country and it is really interesting.

To talk of good stuff, I had The Punch Brothers Who's Feeling Young Now? recommended to me. It is thrilling music. There is also good stuff on The Hunger Games soundtrack (believe me!)

  • JoJo,

I was in a [multi-national chainstore] the other day, and the staff were bitching about the music playing. Every month, some philistine in head office sent them a DVD with ten 'popular' songs on it, and they had to play that DVD every day, all day. Ten songs, eight hours a day, seven days a week. For a month. Talk about Management Music Torture.

Torture for me would be a Dire Straits/Simply Red medley. Although it might bore me to death before I confessed to whatever the bastards wanted.

And it was news to me that it's his composition. Dude must have some publishing income!

In these parts, this seems likely to make you even more of an unperson than the reggae-haters.

(I agree, but it just ain't my genre.)

Hey, plenty of people seem to love them and all power to them. I just don't seem to get it.

  • Scott Chris,

Sorry guys…was never a fan of anti-prog naive pop. Don’t ‘get’ the Smiths either. Morrissey’s poncy voice and one dimensional melodies curl me toes:

Come on Eileen Dexy's Midnight Runners: The rhythm is perfect for drunk morons who can't dance even when sober. The lyrics shouted by said drunk morons at dreadful parties give me a worse hangover than cheap liquor.

I seem to be partial to the odd spoken interlude. This one is Yeats after all.

And mine.. Whatever happened to her?

Never got Morrissey, with his bloody gladiolis and his flat, bordering-on-out-of-tune voice.

Can I just ask, are you actually trolling, or is it just you happen to hate everything that defined my youthful musical taste?

What's next? Let me guess, Cocteau Twins and The Jam?

you've just reminded me of part two of the AWESOME "Whatever Happened to Alternative Nation?" series by the AV Club's Steven Hyden: Axl vs Kurt.
I really recommend the whole series especially to those who grew up in the 90's Here is a link to all of it.
