  • Hebe, in reply to Ross Mason,

What was interesting is how people associate their moments in life with music. And thoughts of your own when you hear

Had one of those moments 20 minutes ago: I involuntarily heard this on the car radio and was instantly dumped back in the worst relationship of my life. Not that the song is that bad -- a bit dreary -- but it's the feelings it evokes.

  • Geoff Lealand,

This is fun but I must get on with preparing Monday's lecture...

    Possibly one of Jackie's favourites.
    ;-)

See, I'm fine with 'Afternoon Delight' too. It's just a one-hit wonder pop song.

It's rock pomp that really raises my hackles.

  • Roger Lacey,

I have vague memories of this being played on high rotate by the neighbours many years ago. It still makes me want to pour neat dettol in my ears. Eeeugh,

Dunno about Jackie, but I've always found that harmonising rather good.

I don’t think this crime against non-hearing impaired people has been mentioned yet:

    or indeed this one

  • Danielle, in reply to Ngaire BookieMonster,

Any song which includes a spoken word interlude.

In our house, there is a rule. All songs which:

    - have a spoken word interlude
    - contain handclaps
    - mention the days of the week

are fucking ace songs. That's all there is to it.

Additionally, I am stunned that a) there is someone who didn't know that Cat Stevens wrote 'The First Cut is the Deepest' (Russell!!) and that b) there is someone who doesn't acknowledge it as an absolute pearl of a song which we should all adore.

Here is my favourite Cat Stevens song:

More when I've finished reading this thread, which is KILLING ME DEAD IN THE DEPTHS OF MY SOUL. You people.

(Paranthetical: my husband has a theory that Ian Curtis sounds like Jim Morrison but no one will admit the influence because, y'know, it's Jim Morrison. Heh.)

    o Yes.

And a shouty chorus. And the letters of the alphabet.

Red Sovine! Excellent! We have an entire collection of Red Sovine songs because dude, they are HILARIOUS. There's always a 'camper full-ah kids' the trucker has to avoid on a snowy road and he plunges to his death to save them (or something). Truckers: they're heroes, you know.

Just a thought...didn't we get enough of this with Matinee Idle over summer? Stopped listening to that about two years ago.

You can't like Bread? Surely not.

Which leads naturally to the Partridge Family

    And Donny Osmond

Worst vocal performance, and most over-rated band of all time

    Don’t ‘get’ the Smiths either.

I walk away from a thread for an hour, and look what happens ):

Although I can't help thinking that if you don't get The Smiths, that's because the joke's on you.

  • B Jones,

Anyone who's worked retail at a certain time of year is likely to have issues with Christmas music. Someone did a horrific 90s boy band version of I'll be home for Christmas that was on high rotate in the mall I worked in. I'd pay to never have hear that again. That and Mariah Carey.

  • Will de Cleene,

Celene Dion, Mariah Carey and all those other crooners and warblers set off my tinnitus, but that's more of a daily pain than cruel and ununsual. Room 101 would be a mix-tape of 70's and '80's dreck my parents liked:

Psychological violence like that makes Black Eyed Peas' My Humps almost enjoyable.

Yeah, just like Jeff Buckley (well, his estate) and "Hallelujah"

Except that would go to Leonard Cohen.

We haven't played this yet, have we? I know it holds a special place here in some people's hearts, including my own. So I'll post it without judging.
