What signal is being sent to Telecom -- and for that matter, to such companies as Vodafone and Orcon, who are already installing their own equipment in unbundled Telecom exchanges?
Didn't vodafone make a statement not so long ago, saying they were putting a hold on their red network roll out, because of telecom's cabinentisation?
I braved vodafone's website, but can't find anything about the red network roll out forecast and chorus's one doesn't have CHCH CBD forecast to 2010, which is actually one of the earlier ones. -

In this case, to politicians in general. Cunliffe is the only one who I'd give the credit of actually being able to discern the subtleties of language around "peering", and even he probably wouldn't come up with something quite so, err, useful.
But you're right, when it comes to matters commercial I'm unwilling to give National any credit whatsoever about considering reining in the baser urges of large corporates. Their history is not replete with examples that give me comfort.

Kung Fu Panda has been out on DVD for quite a while. We have a copy and it gets watched regularly by the young-uns (and not-so-...)

On the internet front, I know that rural broadband may become a hotter topic when the proposed National Animal Identification & Traceability system gets off the ground. If farmers, stock transporters and saleyards etc. are required to participate in electronic registries and data transfer systems, then net speed in the back-blocks will become an issue.

You have to start somewhere. Even getting the inter-city links established improves the chances of cockies getting faster tubes. Plus, I didn't say that there was any benefit to rural dwellers from the current plan. I was answering someone else's question as to what benefit faster broadband offers to the primary sector.
I don't see how it enables me to decide that right now, at 1333, I want to watch Goodbye Pork Pie in Wellington when nobody else does. Doing that efficiently requires big caches of content fairly close to the end users, and that isn't cheap.
Akamai is a beautiful thing, and it's got those big caches of content fairly close to the end users. In NZ. Now.
Also, IPTV doesn't pretend to offer you every movie ever made. You choose from what's available, not from anything, ever, in the history of movies. So it doesn't have to let you watch Goodbye Pork Pie now, or even tomorrow, because there's probably insufficient demand. It might, however, let you watch last week's Coronation Street , or some of the movies that were showing at the cinema in January. -
It will be interesting to see who are the private parties in these deals.
In their existing structures Telecom, Voda, Telstra and even Vector are all currently banned from my reading of it (IIRC Vector own a vertically integrated telco unit that sells data over fibre but that could possibly be easily adjusted to this model) . Transfield, Downer, Fulton Hogan etc may want to build it but owning it would be a big change for them.So who's going to do it?

Good point, though I know he (or someone who works for him) has certainly heard of Facebook. He "friended" me and many others I know before the last election. I left him on my list to see what use he made of it, but never heard another word.
I deleted him this morning, mainly because he's a dick.

I suspect the real agenda is "my mates at W**** and V**** wildly sunk millions into fibre and wireless and this gives us a chance to buy the toxic assets off them.
I've gotta get out of this job, I'm getting too cynical...
I had fibre past the home when I lived in Portsmouth in the early 90's. It was cool, and broke the BT monopoly. SO I admire the goal...

@legbreak - it was released just before Christmas. You're sufficiently behind that they're about to release Madagascar 2 on DVD, man. Personally I'm looking forward to the school holidays so I can take my daughter to Monsters vs Aliens... and then there's Pixar's new one, "Up", which looks beautiful.

We have a wireless broadband system at home (currently at work) because of our semi-rural location. It is supplied by a company called GeoLink (probably www.geolink.co.nz). It is not totally reliable or particularly fast but beats the hell out of the old dial-up ihug service we had before.
I think it has elements of a relay-system involved so it can get a bit flaky but, as I say, it is am improvement on what we had before. And it is all we are likely to get for the foreseeable future.
It might be suitable for farmers, etc unless they want to watch/download movies, etc...

I'm actually fine that edits are made by the individual concerned if they're identified as such. There's some matters about which only direct knowledge can be the authority even if it is open to challenge.

When I speedtested the other night I was getting 9Mbps down and it said the average speedtest for NZ was something like 3Mbps. That's pretty impressive as far as I'm concerned but not sure of the nature of speedtesters...
