  • Roger,

this Chinese news item, re-creating Tiger Woods' unfortunate incident, is the freakiest thing I've seen all week

And don't the accompanying comments paint such an attractive picture of some of the US society?

Ah yes... Tiger Woods' penis has become the American equivalent of Helen Clark's pussy: The media obsession with both organs being in direct inverse proportion to their actual news value.

Meanwhile, another famous nigger gave a major policy speech on Afghanistan while Tiger was committing vehicular homicide on innocent trees. Guess which event has foreign policy implications for New Zealand -- because you'd never have guessed from the media coverage over the last couple of days.

It's not a recreation - it's genuine chinese spy satellite footage - including the scenes inside the house!!!

  • 3410,

Okay, looking forward to meeting some of my penpals tonight (though major bummer that Danielle won't be in attendance.) Make sure you say hello, if you get the chance.

  • Tony Parker,

Because this is the Friday thread I'd like to know what people think of this. It would appear the teaching profession's arguments about National Standards and the subsequent public comments are starting to become too much for some.

    :)

Well, even if I didn't have two other engagements, I couldn't drink, thanks to my parasite. I would need some alcohol for courage-making purposes, because I am a scaredy wimp. (Hey 3410, how will everyone recognise you? Are you planning on entering the room while prone?)

I like how the article first says that Tolley threw her weight behind the union, then quotes her as saying that "to claim the code of conduct has anything to do with muzzling schools and their opinions on any subject is ludicrous."

The DomPost will be happy anyhow, it fits into their "teachers should shut up and follow orders" editorial line.

My description matches, exactly, that of BenWilson, minus two inches in height and one wife.

There sounds to be a degree of over reaction going on there if the veracity of the article can be believed. A code that states:

it is unacceptable for employees to comment on government policy if it constitutes a "personal attack" on a minister, work colleagues or other state servants..

… does not appear to be an overly onerous test, unless I am missing something? It is certainly a long way from an:

Nametags - please , please . One of the things I hate about social doodas is having to go up to people, and ask them who they are. Well, I hate doing it anyway. I am also bummed, Danielle, that you won't be there. Seriously bummed. Some day, my friend, some day.

It seems to me you're missing Tolley regaling her subordinates with rat-centred parables.

  • Tony Siu,

The video about Tiger Woods is posted from a Taiwan-based newspaper called Apple Daily, and let's just say the paper's content is two pulps away for being a member of the yellow press. On any given day, it will be hard to miss Apple Daily's headlines-grabing "news" of large pictures of ordinary folk's crime and delinquency, and if it has blood then so be that's day front page photo spread. Daily, which got its start from Hong Kong loves to graphically illustrate "news" in computer-generated graphics in a step-by-step recreation format; it illustrate everything from celebrities' love-triangles, politicians' drama and ordinary folks suicides/car crashes and other tragic 'people's stories'.

And speaking of Tiger-gate (can we call that now?), here another video from Olbermann.

  • Stephen Judd,

Roger: Gio beat me to the rat story.

But anyway it gives us a good example of the problem with the policy. Based on this story, I would say that Tolley is rude and contemptuous. Is that a personal attack by me on her? Some people would say yes. And yet I think it's legitimate criticism.

Good idea Jackie. Great to meet you @ the book launch. My on-line virtual family has manifest into the 'real world' and I feel more part of the PA team now that I can put faces to some of your names. And thanks to your father that my Geordie family came to NZ with airfares paid in 1966. See more of the PA family tonight hopefully.

  • Tom Semmens,

As I've said elsewhere, anyone with eyes to see can see the teachers are quietly building a mighty alliance to take on Tolley over national assessments next year. My bet is they'll wait until teachers, principals, parents, boards of trustees and every educationalist from the PM's favourite expert down is onside then sadlly say the refusal of the minister to see it the way everyone else does leaves them with no choice but to to refuse to implement the standards.

Anne Tolley will be be left high and dry with nowhere to go.

Maybe someone in the SSC is brighter than Tolley (not difficult, I would speculate the Yukka's in the foyer of the SSC are smarter than she is) and that is where this sudden need for a "little talk" over the Standards of Integrity and Conduct code has come from.

Oh, by popular demand, there will be name-tags.

    The stickery kind.

    Unless they get washed away.
