I'll add my thankyness to Jackie's thankyness, because she captures exactly what I want to say.
Russell, if you're thinking about enhancements, here's a possibility, and I think it would take nothing more than starting up a thread, or maybe an "in the spotlight". What about a "Births, Deaths, Civil Unions and other items of interest" column. In the olden days, the community that mattered to us would have been our local town, and we would have put those kinds of notices in the local paper. PAS has a bit of that 'local paper' function for us, and there's quite a community that has gathered around it. T'would be nice to have a way of announcing those life events to our community.

Now, I was thinking of the perfect PA commission for you yesterday. I'd send you on an architectural and philosophical tour of the former Tourist Hotel Corporation hotels. You would meet interesting people, tell jokes and fit each stop on journey into a cultural and technical framework.
What an excellent idea. I shall find a way to make this part of my PhD.

..to join the chorus of appreciation for Russell and PA. Incidentally, if you are passing through Piopio, they have some of the best strawberries in the world (from a market garden just out of town, heading north) They actually grow them on a straw mulch. (This may bring them back!).

My biggest fear was Media7 would take you away from the direct insightful commentary that has been PA.
I love the new people you've brought into PAS. They are voices I would never have heard without PA, because I just don't move in those communities. They say things I wouldn't normally hear and that makes my life richer, so thank you Emma, Hadyn and Graeme and thank you to all those who write in the comments section.
I hope all the people who write and read here have an enjoyable holiday break.

My biggest fear was Media7 would take you away from the direct insightful commentary that has been PA.
I stopped doing a hell of a lot this year -- columns in the Listener, Unlimited and Idealog, occasional spots on The Panel -- and also handed over chief production duties on Public Address Radio to Damian. (As Craig says upthread, big ups to the Down Low Concept, and the saintly Glynis in particular for that show, and to Craig himself for his erudite commentaries.)
But the upshot has been that I'm not flaying myself writing for money, and, time permitting, I can put that into my blog. What hasn't happened is implementing some new ideas, but there was a lot new to process as it was.
I love the new people you've brought into PAS. They are voices I would never have heard without PA, because I just don't move in those communities. They say things I wouldn't normally hear and that makes my life richer, so thank you Emma, Hadyn and Graeme and thank you to all those who write in the comments section.
I like the fact that all our writers have notable other lives and work that they can share and talk about here when it suits. Anyone who thinks it's wrong to plug your own work in your blog doesn't really get blogging, frankly.

It's been a choice year. I love the community we've got here and that PA System is a pleasant place to be, whether discussing something quite serious or just having some lolz.

And when we do get down to the griping...for me, I guess it's going to be somehow much more satisfying slagging off a Government than the Opposition for a change.
Meh... this is the last thread -- and entirely the wrong time -- to be starting a brawl, but I'll just say both Government and Opposition have scored a "must try harder" grade on their report cards.
I'm so glad to have someone like Grant in Parliament.
I'm really in two minds whether to be pleased -- or horribly disappointed -- that nobody's maiden speech could be fairly placed in the Hansard Hall of Shame. (Or, to be generous, the "I'll have a thousand tabs of what he's on before it gets banned" list.) A lot of tofu -- nutritious but bland -- but nothing really weird.
I actually think, taking my partisan hat off for the holidays, that the Class of '08 is looking pretty impressive all around. God knows some of them can't get up the greasy pole fast enough for my liking.

Poo... New year's resolution: Don't do anything but sleep between the hours of midnight and six am. And I still credit Glynis with any virtues my piece have. One week, when I'd choked on my own tongue for the twentieth time (really), and was feeling particularly angst-rddden, she piped up with "I didn't understand a word, but it was fine."
I'd have married Glynis on the spot, but she's far too clever. :)

Merry Xmas to RB and the rest of the PA team, I've loved reading all the contributions and the insightful and goodhumoured discussion. It's been my first stop on the 'net every time I load up Firefox for sometime now. My internet resolution would be to get a bit more involved in the film/music/art/literature discussion here, if the others would let me. And if I get some time to do so.
Also, I promised to organise a proper get-together with some of the ChCh PA regulars (I've already met a couple of them, they know who they are), as it would good to finally put some faces to names. How does sometime in the new year sound?

It was unbelievably ill-advised. It made him look really petty.
He seems clever enough, but that was a weird flub.

I swear I thought about it the other day when they mentioned that Chrome was coming out of beta. That thought might or might have not been followed by this one: "Christ, I've got to go out more."
I first started commenting on PAS in fits and starts a couple of years ago I think, but it's only in 2008 that I decided to really get on all of your nerves. Job well done so far! So allow me to join you in appreciating the house that Russell built and wishing good cheer to all during the upcoming festive crunch.

May well have been, and I just missed it -- though if I wanted to get my bitch on, I'd say most maiden speeches are firmly in the worthy but dull camp. But it would have been damn nice, all the same, if they'd gotten a little more attention than Lockwood Smith getting a verbal gender reassignment.
