  • Che Tibby,

hmmmm.... i read the privy council decision early this morning.

this case smacks of detectives taking a look, deciding who the murderer was, and then building a case to convict him.

now, i'm no expert on policing, but you'd think that they would compile evidence, then decide?

as it is, the pc have brought into serious question all of the police evidence. and some of it appears to be a potentially serious misrepresentation of events.

  • Paul Litterick,

Curses, I wasn't first and I didnt get that People's Choice Award. Well done, Russell.

A range of blog awards would be no bad thing. It is odd that one of the most important parts of Internet should be represented by one award, while there are legions of sponsored awards for sites that don't really matter, of the Best Lifestyle Real Estate Site in the Western Bay of Plenty kind.

  • Idiot Savant,

    Congratualtions - it's a well-deserved win.

As for Bain and Blair, I've already expressed my loathing of the latter (don't let the door hit your arse on the way out, you murdering war criminal), and I don't have much of an opinion on the former. Probably I should have, but its just not a case I've paid particular attention to over the years.

  • Che Tibby,

    good point! congratulations!

umm.. remember a couple of christmas' back i said that if you kept winning you'd likely have to share those awards with writers past and present?

any chance of flicking me the 2005 one?

[che notes: chance of winning slight on account of getting half of tze ming's traffic, and a tenth of russell's]

  • Craig Ranapia,

It's not that Neil doesn't have a point in some respects. It just a shame he has to be so bloody mean-spirited about making it.

Having said that, Russell, perhaps The Herald could find a (marginally) less obnoxious and ill-informed rentaquote than Sir Howard Morrison - and, yet again, nice to see the Your Views column remains a shining beacon of thoughtful and temperate debate. "Mean-spirited"? Christ, Finn has much to learn...

I placed a lot of stock in the opinion of a lawyer friend of mine who read Karam's book and followed the case and was saying some time ago to me that there was something very wrong there. He's also very critical of Bain's original trial lawyer.

  • Span .,

Congrats! That's great news :-) How can I find Radio Chick? I believe I have heard of Kiwiblog once or twice before ;-)

I think an NZ blog awards thingie would be good and I seem to recall some initial discussions about it a few years ago, or maybe I was just talking to myself. I don't have the technical know-how, but I'm keen as beans to help out with other stuff if I can.

This Neil Finn stuff is a bit weird. I don't know a lot about the NZ music industry (or indeed music) but I find this current kerfuffle very strange indeed - did Helen and Neil have a falling out about something? Has he been approached by National to be parachuted into a high list place next year? I'm a bit unsure as to what his motivation is.

"Best blog for making work bearable"

you actually have paid employment??? please tell me where, cos i want a job like your's (or riddley's or craig's or ... well you get the point)!

oh and congrats from me too russell. well-deserved.

re blair, he can put his hand on his heart as much as he likes, but i don't think he will ever be remembered for anything other than his complicity in the iraq invasion & occupation.

As I said in an earlier post, I think Neil feels he was stitched up by Labour over the proposed Youth Radio Network, an idea he championed for a long time, but which gave way as a quid pro quo for the voluntary local music targets on commercial radio.

Ah good point RB, I had forgotten that. But it's not like any other party is going to deliver the Youth network instead now is it?

  • merc,

Ah Riddley is the spokesperson for such things, but you may ah see some of His work on the er, Flashbacks thread by Dory, I mean Damian, seems to be some sort of verb becomes noun thingy.

  • Craig Ranapia,

Hey, my weird-o-meter started glowing when the Bain house was torched. I'm no legal eagle, but you do have to wonder whether any appeal is ever so slightly hampered when the crime scene is reduced to a pile of ash.

Anjum - maybe Blair is going to try to do an Al Gore to reinvent himself as something else entirely, in the hope of leaving a legacy that isn't about dead soldiers and raped women.

  • Joanna,

What about when he (perhaps allegedly) went to Parliament to talk to Bolger who was PM at the time about it, and was greeted with a "And you are?" Wouldn't that be more annoying, on a personal basis?

  • Lyndon Hood,

    ...judged blog awards...

I've been told someone once ran web awards such that users rated rather than simply voted. Probably wouldn't work so good on the small scale, but still.

    Congratulations, of course.

  • anjum rahman,

ah, well, given that i'm technologically challenged, i'd best stay where i am then... managing to get a gravatar that works was my moment of technological glory (that, and managing to learn how to txt).

span, i think al gore didn't quite have the past that blair does (largely because he managed to avoid becoming potus), so could reinvent himself. mind you, he was still vp while the sanctions and various other bombings of iraq were taking place... but that just doesn't seem to match the scale of the current mess.

i just can't see blair being accepted in the way gore has been; his brand has been tarnished. however, if ribena gets back it's brand value, i'm prepared to reconsider my views on blair.
