Hard News: The Silver Scrolls: watch and read the story

The Hall of fame is not (yet) a physical place, but it offers yet another set piece to look forward to each year.
My big complaint about the Hall of Fame: it's becoming very male dominated - three acts including women verses 14 without women. Or to look at individuals, that's four women and 65 men.
The New Zealand music industry is male dominated but it's not that male dominated.

Photo nerdism: The two women in the Silver Scroll photo with M Chunn are (L>R) Bronwyn Teuton (sp?) and Kaye Glamuzina, both from Radio NZ National Music at that time. Naughty CMS, naughty!

BTW, I am loving all the Silver Scrolls goodies that Audioculture has been unveiling. The awards have always seemed a bit mysterious - probably just because they're an industry event, closed to the public - but all this history is like getting a look inside and seeing what's been going on.

Oh great, thank you. I'll update that. I didn't recognise Kaye in the pic!

There are a ton more images awaiting too Robyn. I spent large parts of the last 48 hours trying to get these online but was defeated. Thankfully I think we've worked through the issues (they were caused by our brand new search bar across the site - something I've been trying to get up for an age and maybe rushed a little too fast to the finish line) and the 90s image page should be up in a few hours too.

incredible fricking event. John Campbell a genius choice as MC. thank you

John Campbell was a bit bumbly at times in that lovable Lloyd Scott manner. It was a long night but the live stream had few if any hiccups.
There was highlight upon highlight. Bill Savesi's touching speech, Don McGlashan and his Death and the Maiden guitar lesson, Jordan Luck's quote from Graham Brazier saying 'sing till you're in a pine box then come back and haunt them' - classic!
And the music, it's all about the music... Delaney Davidson's version of Billy Bold, Fazerdaze doing Dark Child and Multi-Love by Warren Maxwell and friends was superb - personal favs. All performances nicely complemented by the orchestral scores.

The Wireless has Kody Nielson and Buster Stiggs together.

Don McGlashan's great explanation/demonstration of how songs from New Zealand sound different:

And is that a younger Simon Morris? Maybe Tony Backhouse between Bronwyn and Kaye??

Oh my gosh, it’s photo-tastic over on AudioCulture! (and I guessed good)

If Karl du Fresne wasn't being so deadly serious in his latest column on "sex, drugs & rock and roll", it'd be in the comedy section.

They were world-famous in Auckland – or to be more specific, Ponsonby
He obviously slept through that period when Blue Lady was part of a nationwide ad campaign in the 90s - introducing the band to a new generation.
I enjoyed that Don McGlashan video above, simple yet effective, a tidy tutorial.

He's such an ass.
It's nowhere near as funny as the blue fit he had on his blog after Chris Knox suggested The Beatles were punk rockers in the Hamburg years.
Karl du Fresne: the only person in the world to remain outraged by punk rock 40 years on.

When John Lydon heard that an anniversary reissue in NZ of the Sex Pistols' "God Save The Queen" was required by censors to change the original cover art - the one depicting the Queen with a safety pin through her lips - he reputedly remarked, "I'm delighted we're still causing trouble with the establishment."

Hey Russell, wonderful articles! In the Audio Culture Silver Scrolls 90's photos, that's me on the far right of the pic with Mike, Simon Morris, Steve Robinson and Tony Backhouse. I performed Anchor Me that year. I think that the lovely Kaye Glamuzina might be the beauty in the middle.
