.Jewish scholars believe that it was the pomegranate that was the forbidden fruit of the Garden of Eden.
There you go, blame the Poms.

like to be able to suppress the level 2 and lower heading page numbers but keep the level 1 heading page numbers
David, you're right, I don't know any non-macro way around that either.

This is true, hardly anyone is affected by Auckland's woes.
Dream on, Wellingtonians. But more to the point, there's only one choice of election process whereas there are competing operating systems.
-
It is of course possible for anyone to set up a *market* for Android apps, so those criticisms may be addressed by a competitor (Amazon?) entering the industry?
Anyway, don't *all* business ventures make less money then their owners hoped?

the rosy red cheek...
There you go, blame the Poms.
the apple has been gene sequenced
and apparently comes from Kazakhstan
where some mutation meddled with medlars, or something similar, 65 million years ago...
Massive meteorite impact effects or Gamma Radiation maybe - heard this on Morning Report today and this article credits a New Zealand company with the research, nice. -
Based on some recent scientific discoveries I tried the Apple a day diet but the motherboards kept getting stuck in my...
In the App department, this might be a cool one (aSmart HUD), but what I'd like to know is, if there is no one else in the car, how did he make this video without killing himself, or somebody else?

What K-T Did
__"She'll be Apples Mate"__.Evolutionary analysis tracked this whole genome duplication (WGD) event to around 60 million years ago. It is thought to be a genetic survival response to an event that caused mass extinctions of other species, including the dinosaurs. Other well adapted plant species, such as poplar, have been shown to have undergone a similar evolutionary response at the same time.
So, Eve was a Dinosaur? and couldn't be saved by Iridium
Mind you, that Phone's no iCandy -

True. Although that would be the same Amazon whose e-reader is so tightly controlled that it was able to reach out and remotely delete '1984' from the Kindle of everyone who bought it :-)
But I think it is noteworthy that the App Store model has drawn in literally thousands of small developers who hadn't previously had access to a global market. That's why others are looking to emulate it.

New meaning to the 'hand of god' analogy? It's a slippery slope from this to making you vomit if you eat any food other than Monsanto approved soy beans.
ETA: </sarc> Just in case it wasn't obvious.

Ermmm, the guy doing the video is in the passenger seat, it's American, not to be confused with A Merkin

And they say that Merkins have no sense of Irony.

while you can't buy porn at the App Store
Oh great. Now you have pushed me from disappointment to anger.
I didn't think Russell would resort to the "you're all dirty pornographers" argument at those concerned with openness and how much control is exerted over users and by proxy to the Internet by manufactures like Apple.
Russell, what were you doing with your iPad that made you blind?
-

Ah, yes, true, but it was a bit confusing when he went to the right of the dashboard to look at 'my GPS'. How many distractions does he need in one car?
-

I'm a little confused. Apple destkop and notebooks computers are far less restrictive, correct? What's the problem if one class of devices happens to be, so long as the others aren't? Plus android is in fact open source. Is Apple morally obligated to also keep its environment open? It seems to me that it's been a useful point of difference over the years between MS and Apple and Linux environments, and that one could settle for the degree of control they preferred.

Didn't the Internet do that? Did you hear about Freshmeat? Have you read the analysis of $$s made on the App store? It's 2/10th of fuckall for the total effort that goes in.
Come on, we all know Apple makes nice kit but the hype goes beyond all reason, and this isn't a revolution they are leading, in many may ways they are taking backwards steps and a good journalist / commentator would point that out.
-

My thought there was why would the passenger need his own GPS? but then I thought he may have just been a Navigator and then "What do you call someone who knows all the back routes, an Alleygator?" and then I just stopped thinking cos it hurt.
-
s Apple morally obligated to also keep its environment open?
Apple can do whatever they want. I find it strange though that seemingly sane people complain about the control freakery of a minor politician in a minor country whilst lauding the praises of Apple's control which goes way beyond anything Rodney could dream up.
-
Yeah, except politics ain't a consumer product I suppose. I am struggling with this analogy of yours, verily.
But if you want to talk about negative repercussions, I have one. I was at a special ed meeting a couple of weeks ago and they gave this presentation on assistive technology, lauding amongst other things the features and low price of the Lenovo tablet (whilst the iPad, in the words of the presenter, "isn't ready for us yet", due precisely to its being lockded down). But - bad news - the Lenovo was going to be withdrawn form the market as the company tried to reposition itself following the launch of the iPad. And the closest alternative is much more expensive.
An unintended consequence, no doubt, but a consequence nonetheless.

BTW Don, when you start getting all 'Apple is the devil' on Russell's arse, think I'll pass on becoming one of your 'case studies'.
In case you hadn't noticed, I'm a Mac fanboy of the highest order. And yes, my horns are growing nicely, since you asked.
Russell, it really does seem that any Apple discussion here leads to the Spanish Inquisition. It would be fine if we were all in fact Religious Zealots, but last time I looked we just liked buying new tech products, and prefer Apple to PC. Whoopty do!
Why can't we all just ... get a life?
-
I admire the force of your conviction, Don, but I worry about your blood pressure. Your shuttle to Wellness will arrive soon.

Why can't we all just ... get a life?
This is not my life?
Now, about those credit card sized "Do Everything" devices... -
You mean credit cards?

Ok, I bow to the group's sanguine view on Apple. May you never need to jailbreak and may Apple never request to have you disconnected from the interwebs as a result of your disobedience.

I didn't think balance would be hard to ask for here, but as I find elsewhere, if it is asked in respect to Apple products and behaviour it is never as well received request.
-
I'm more interested in the accessories. Great
ipad bag here from Minnie Cooper -
You mean credit cards?
Well, all mine seems to do is suck quietly on my bank account. I want one that will stream all my media, keep in touch with everybody, make my coffee in the mornings whilst formatting my thesis as I read the news and post on PAS. Amongst other things..
Not much to ask, is it?.
