Which raises the whole issue of the value to New Zealand of allowing Universities (and technical institutes) to compete for students.

None of Otago's campuses really compete with other institutions.

Wellington and Christchurch are medical school outposts, Otago provides med students to south of Auckland for training, Auckland students go to Auckland hospitals for their 4th and 5th years.

Invercargill is only a teachers college outpost, since Otago took over the Dunedin College of Education. That doesn't compete with SIT.

Auckland has some minor competition - they run a MBA type course there - with Auckland. But largely it's a marketing and admin centre.

It's somewhat tangential to this thread, but this is a wonderfully erudite and entertaining essay by Jonathan Raban, an English writer living in Seatlle. It's actually about Sarah Palin but it has all kinds of resonances with themes here.

    The new Overlord is announced...
Stuff reveals that one Doug McKay is to be the CEO of the as yet unsolidified Super City...

McKay has 20 years experience at senior level – he has headed Lion Nathan, Carter Holt Harvey, Goodman Fielder, Sealord and most recently Independent Liquor

Look for lots of overseas partners then...?
and anyone who can flood the country with RTDs (Ready to Drink beverages) has got to have community values at heart...
    Party Central here we come...

Wayne Walden, also from the transition agency, said they needed someone at proven experience at CEO level who can handle complex change.

    There'll be change?
    Spare change anyone?

  • Russell Brown,

Having one regional body to make all long-term plans and to manage transport, water and asset management needs means Auckland will finally have a co-ordinated process to make decisions and to invest accordingly.

This will mean clearer and consistent decision-making on regional issues, clear leadership for Auckland and a reduction in the duplication of services.

    But ... but ...

  • Sacha,

That fine sentiment lasted until they realised there was serious chance of the left winning the election. And tired neolib wackiness about separating thinking from doing came into play. Oh, and some empire-building.

I thought Massey's history in Palmerston North went back to the 1920s and was named for the conservative first world war farmer Prime Minister. Wikipedia agrees. I have several friends who really, really like living in Palmerston North, and they don't even mind that it doesn't have any beaches, so don't knock it.

Because then people could grumble metonymically all they want without offending any of their nice Wellingtonian friends?

PS Firefox wants me to change Wellingtonian to Washingtonian; obviously it has been reading the thread.

Anywhere where the living is a bit hard, and politicians are out of their comfort zone, without their usual support (except for electronic) networks-

tho' there *are* endangered species in those areas - so, we'd have to confine the pollies to barracks. Unheated, I'd suggest-

No. Because we're already stashing all the government's documents there. Might as well save a bit of toing and froing and move the rest of the infrastructure there as well.

  • giovanni tiso,

Although one of the arguments is that the government wouldn't be paralysed if there's an earthquake in Wellington. This lot being paralysed would give the rest of the country room to breathe, and you have to like the chances of a quicker civil defence response with Chris Carter out of the way.

Do we want evidence & suspects in one place? Especially as the National Archive is being subsumed by another body?

Giovanni, the public transport isn't so good in Palmerston North. But it's all flat and nowhere is that far from anywhere else. Good for bicycles and wheelchairs.

Entire city placed into mixed quantum state...

    But ... but ...

A team of scientists has succeeded in putting an object large enough to be visible to the naked eye into a mixed quantum state of moving and not moving, known as a Superposition
    - can Auckland be far away from this Superstate?...

Which raises the whole issue of the value to New Zealand of allowing Universities (and technical institutes) to compete for students.

It's way better than the UK system of artificially restricting access and creating a league table of universities, based not on course quality but on a self-perpetuating ability to attract students with good grades.

The University of Otago has campuses in Invercargill, Dunedin, Christchurch, Wellington and Auckland. Massey University not the only one doing the franchise-y thing.

Yes, but I don't work for Massey.

None of Otago's campuses really compete with other institutions.

Except in Public Health research, where Otago in Wellington competes with Massey in Wellington. I guess that's kind of like BK and McDs battling it out in NZ. Don't ask me which is which.

I thought Massey's history in Palmerston North went back to the 1920s and was named for the conservative first world war farmer Prime Minister. Wikipedia agrees.

Yes, but that was when it was only an agricultural training centre, much like Lincoln. I believe the decision to expand it into other faculties (or to open a new, full university in Wanganui) came in the 1960s (though Wikipedia tells me there was already some curriculum expansion in the 1950s).

I have several friends who really, really like living in Palmerston North, and they don't even mind that it doesn't have any beaches, so don't knock it.

I went to high school there, which I believe gives me the right to bag it all I like. :-P

Luke: I;ve noted a couple of others things that may give voters "national heartburn".

    1. More and more people are earning the $12.50/hour minimum wage.....and no prospect of earning any more.

    2. A number of employers seem to be using teenage "job trials" every weekend to cut their wage bills. There are no jobs there....just a long string of teens hoping to get jobs who instead end up working a weekend day or evening for free.

  • Keir Leslie,

    x = y makes x be y (assignment operator) while
x == y asks if x is y (testing equality; don't ask what kind of equality).

Horrible horrible syntactical fuck up from the depths of nasty procedural languages. It is in my opinion a truly daft idiom to use in any other context.

    (And

Is the meaning really not absolutely evident there?

it really really isn't. Sorry, but yeah.)

    SRSLY?

But surely this could only work for a short time (maybe six week, or a school term), before the word got around that no one ever got an actual job?

And make them walk to and from their electorates to parliament. Or they could use the national cycleway.
