This government's actions make perfect sense if you bear in mind their policies are designed to support and extend the business models of Sky, Infratil / NZ Bus and Fulton Hogan. Hence the hostility to public broadcasting and anything other than roads, trucks and buses. These are the most obvious ones I'm sure there are many more that are lower profile.
What's good for New Zealand or for the future isn't even a concern as far as I can tell. It's business as usual: payback for donors and a full trough for cronies.

There appears to be some doubt whether the man is a trader, or if this is a hoax of some kind. Poe's law has been invoked.....

Tom Semmens, in reply to
If he is a hoax, then move over Stephen Colbert - you just got some serious competition.

Interesting story:

You know something's amiss when the Torygraph is calling bullshit.

3410,
I don’t find Red Alert (for the most part) an excessively useful source of value adding commentary on any subject and I do put that squarely on Curran’s shoulders.
Well, fine. You're most welcome to that opinion. What it's got to do with:
Myllylahti hinted at an agenda in this comment on Clare Curran’s blog.
is lost on me.

In the context of comments about the consistent credulity of court reporters (breathlessly repeating police allegations as fact), it's worth dropping this link Brooke Gladstone's 'The Influencing Machine'. A brilliant exposition on media control, illustrated in comic form.

Forbes.com interviews our man Rastani and it seems he checks out.
he may not be a full-blown city trader, but he is a trader.

I recently stumbled on this via Slate, which excepts a chapter, haven't got it yet but it's top of my list.

I realise that JMAD is constrained by funding but it is very new media-oriented when there are so many areas of the media they haven't included eg advertising agencies; film distribution and exhibition. the full gamut of television and telecommunications etc.
Just on the quiet, I have been compiling a regularly-updated Media Ownership in NZ resource for media teachers for over ten years but AUT didn't seem to know about this. Currently looking at film distribition and exhibition locally--did a presentation on this at the recent JMAD conference. -
Back to sky. Ummm.....is it my impression or have others noticed the general lack of different sports now being found on the sky sports channels. Few of the odd ball ones like the red bull air races. BUT certainly more of the cage fighting being seen on more and more of the channels, rather than on late now being in the daytime. Is this the beginning of the shift to the bottom. The lowest common denominator??? The easy way to increase profits??? And of course do we have a shit load of rugby at the moment - or what!

Interesting discussion and I'm not trolling, honestly I'm not, but what about Coro changing to 5.30 and Primetime being devoted to Masterchef Oz. What's that about? Yeah, I know, ratings, but ... sigh.

Islander, in reply to
I could guarentee there are more diehard Coro viewers than OZ Masterchef viewers ... and disappointed Coro viewers make for very agitated & persistent complainers. (Disclaimer of an odd sort: I dont watch "Coro" - but my mother does.
Feel her wrath, idiot programme-controllers!) -

Good on your mum. I can feel a letter to TVNZ coming on!

The Occupy Wall Street movement is in its second week and has now become Occupy together and is spreading across the US. For the first few days it was ignored by the mainstream media and only Al-Jazeera and the local Indymedia covered it. Somehow even twitter prevented it trending. Now it has even made it to the Stuff website. Shows the power of the social media, and the collective action of real people, over the big corporates. Very heartening.

Feel her wrath, idiot programme-controllers!)I threw some baiting burley into the water of a phone conversation with my Mum last night over Coro street, and let's just say the freeding frenzy of great Whites aint got nothing on my Mum's reaction.

It floats around various media teacher lists and appears in our journal Script but I have found a link here, oddly enough from AUT. Needs updating for 2011--I will add it to the list of things to do.

I believe a suitable owner for Media Works is Britian's Channel 4. As they both have a similar business model.

Never Fear!
