  • merc,

I thought Screaming MeeMee were a very narcissistic fire-cracker from Wah Lee...
Miro, Miro in a dutch interior...and Dali's moustach, phew if I didn't love Peter so much I'd have called him on those lyrics...

  • andrew llewellyn,

Don't you know that there's a clear bright line between "good" smacking and "bad" smacking

I'm getting tired of those who lecture us that we smack dogs to train them & it does them more good than harm.

I could post the link, but y'all know where I mean.

No-one (who is any good at it) uses smacking to train dogs anymore, positive reinforcement works as well as, if not better than punishment & I suspect the same goes for rearing kids.

  • Emma Hart,

Emma, i think it was the Choppers that made your brothers naughty, thus necessitating their smacking. the sombre Raliegh 20 on the other hand clearly made you a good child. it's all in The Book.

OTOH, my brothers did all turn out to be straight Christians, two things I failed abysmally at. Now, was it the pansy liberal up-bringing, or the bike?

  • dc_red,

Andrew - I agree with what you're saying, but then it appears not a single Parliamentarian is willing to say that parents should be prosecuted for "lightly" (%$#?!) smacking a child, at the same time that 62 or 63 of them are willing to remove the defence that parents currently have against precisely such a charge.

On a more uplifting note, I had a cool siilver/grey bmx, bought from Farmers in the days immediately before the 10% gst was introduced. I can't for the life of me remember what brand it was though. I do vaguely recall wearing bata bullets, and some black school shoes called "Nomads".

  • Riddley Walker,

oh no, we've discussed before how hitting kids turns them into fine Christian soldiers. the Chopper was clearly the Devil's work, but the beatings must've helped redeem them.

  • merc,

BN = Before Nomads, there were Treks.
Emma, you reacted against the feminie (no cross bar!) Raleigh 20 with counter overtones of Chopper envy, ergo...you find yourself in Christchurch, land of the Solex.

  • dc_red,

    Re: Treks/Nomads

One of them was flat, broad across the top, ugly and worn by rough kids.

One of them had a ridge down the middle of the upper, looked a bit classier, and was worn by better kids.

Both of them had a gluey-rubber sole that lasted a year if you were lucky.

Now I can't remember which one was which, or indeed whether I was a Nomad or a Trek kid.

I do remember when the Nomad/Trek world was shaken beyond anything ever seen by the arrival of Doc Martens circa 1991.

  • andrew llewellyn,

Treks had the ridge down the middle, nomads had the flat top & a ridge around it from which the stitching frayed in no time at all.

  • Che Tibby,

    nomads had the broad top.

    treks also resembled suede.

i had nomads. brown. grubby. no shirt tucked in. on a bike made of stolen parts.

none of this made me any less of an awkward geek.

being het was worthless because girls don't like geeks. being gay was worse. most people discovered that well after they left the mount.

  • Riddley Walker,

NO not wiht the Charlie Browns.
i thought they were called Trekkers. i think they were made by Clark's Shoes?

  • andrew llewellyn,

And before all those were Clarks Commandos! With tracks shaped like wild animals & a compass inside (no shit).

    Or was that somewhere else?

Hey: Clark's Commandos - that'd be a good name for something.

Sounds just like one of my high school boyfriends.

Pegged! When I was thirteen I bought myself my very own ten-speed - a blue World Rider (they made them in Geraldine!) with, yes, a CROSS BAR. Slipping off the pedals while standing up was not recommended.

sigh... where were you emma, old friend.

a raleigh-20 riding gf would have been just my cup of tea.

  • dc_red,

Thanks - I now recall I had successive pairs of black Treks. I was always suspicious of Nomad kids (no offence Che). Upgraded to Docs as soon as I could.

  • 3410,

I remember getting my first bike. A red "Panther" BMX (it was the 80s).

Yes! Mine (about '79/'80): red Panther w/ gold hardware (incl. V-bar) and yellow snakebellies and grips. Kick-brake, of course! Probably the coolest thing I've ever owned.

Re: shoes. What was the name of those ones with an entirely transparent sole through which you could see a kind of rainbow-coloured toxic-waste-sludge-looking pattern?

  • merc,

Something else, they were ripoffs all made under license, remember orange tab Levi's, made under licence, there were Desert Boots too, and Adidas from Fiji, my how the world has turned, no more made under license, now, Made In Japan.
BTW, Charlie Browns were like Roman Sandals(TM), never cool, never got you with anything but lifeline looking towards Europe and dreaming of driving through Paris with the wind in your hair.

"Hey: Clark's Commandos - that'd be a good name for something."

    Isn't that Trevor and Pete?

And, yes, it must have been Sue's Raleigh 20 - apologies for the implication that it might have been your (rather feminine) cycle of choice that I inherited.

And why haven't nomads come back into fashion?, along with black puffy nylon bomber jackets?

  • Beatrix,

I had a Panther! I loved it so much. I used to Turtle Wax it (which I must do to my car someday) and wear special cycling gloves to ride it. Good times...
