  • Matthew Littlewood,

No, this is just journalists having the same trouble with their script as the politicians with their diction - ethnic affairs has only passing relation to ethics, or is it versa vice?

The way Worth has been performing recently, you wouldn't bank on him being able to tell the difference.

  • LegBreak,

I also wonder if I've heard any other leader of their country, save for Dubya, get so tangled up in their vocabulary

I can still remember Jim Bolger.

  • Tom Semmens,

John Key has been in parliament for six years, and never in government. His lack of experience is showing. He clearly likes to run a loose ship, allowing his ministers to get on with it. Local government in Auckland? Let Rodney get on with the job. Result? Rodney Hide has achieved something of a miracle, turning an issue most Aucklanders broadly agreed on into a PR disaster for the government.
    url
More Aucklanders (31%) oppose than support (27%) the super city. 63% of Aucklanders believe consultation has been inadequate. A massive 70% say there should be a referendum.

He hand picked an even more inexperienced class clone to run in Mt. Albert. Melissa Lee has run a terrible campaign and been hung out to dry.

Paula suggests Rankin? John is fine with that, if that is who she wants.

Steven Joyce - I note yet another rapidly promoted class clone - is unbridled and busy running the transport network entirely in the interests of his trucking mates.

The political management of this Richard Worth business is equally appalling - as a microcosm, an out and about John Key is filmed shown saying he doesn't want to say what the nature of the investigation is. Meanwhile, back at the ranch Judith Collins is interviewed happily telling journalists it is sexual in nature. Not a good look.

Key seemed unprepared for Mary Wilson and was unconvincing on Close-Up. He has never felt this heat before as government MP or even as a minister, let alone as Prime Minister.

Key is at his best being the affable Mr. Reasonable, agreeing to everything and telling people what they want to hear. He seems to think he can run cabinet and the country in the same way a board of directors might run a large corporation.

Politically, this scandal should have been easily dealt with. The facts are straight forward. He needs to get a grip on his government, because in the vacuum is fracturing. He needs to be better prepared. And he needs SOMEONE to think through the issues.

  • Stewart,

Tom, have you got any links or anything to back up your remark about Steven Joyce and "his trucking mates"?

I'm not challenging you, just looking for some easy background - I'm at work & can't access much on-line.

  • Just thinking,

    General Trucking not Joyce linked:

" Rail and coastal shipping bodies have argued for years that the road mode is effectively subsidised by the Government investment in roading. Trucking companies pay nothing towards the capital investment required. They pay their share towards the subsequent maintenance of the road, but get the roads that enable them to cart goods for free.

Rail, however, has long had to pay back a return on the investment in track, and coastal ships have to pay wharfage for the luxury of calling at a port, while a truck (usually) does not have to pay anything for driving in the port’s gates.

So if “fairness” is to be found in the debate about subsidies, where do you start?"

Most gloriously delusional rationalisation so far in the current Kiwiblog thread:

get a grip jarbury - mary wilson was out of her depth.

    Awesome.

I missed that RB (being jarbury myself). It sounded to me like it was John Key who was out of his depth.

  • Joshua Arbury,

"Just thinking", that is not quite correct. Petrol taxes/RUCs do pay for all the construction of new state highways and half the construction of local roads.

Joyce is wrong when he says that roading is self-funded, because of that council funding. So basically he lied in today's interview on Morning Report.

  • Ian Dalziel,

    Deaf and Tactless...

here's Mary Wilson's interview of John Key.

I finally figured out what Pry Mincer Key is saying - and it is a brilliant contribution to modern legal taxonomy - he is, of course, referring to the modern plague of crime by telephony - the elegantly coined Text Torts - Not to be confused with any other group of "Gloves-off" artificial disseminators obviously : )

He seems convinced that the plural of "text" is "textes".

I always thought it was just "texts". Sounds much better really.

Has anyone else noticed the similarity between the Herald’s photo of Worth this morning, and how The Grauniad’s Steve Bell used to draw George W Bush?

I suspect that is Key's morning meeting to get his idea for the day, then calls it consensus.

Why Mr Wylie, you's been watchin TrueBlood.

Nah - Joe's just keeping me honest - for beyond The Bedsitting Room there is a very elegantly clipped and 'edgy piece of Dystopiary which I was channelling - the truly excellent Riddley Walker by Russell Hoban.
