Adding to Tom's list, for those who remember the NME in its glory years: Steven Wells. Sadly, I doubt a Jackson/Wells encounter ever took place.

I think this is the web going nutz, now somebody's talking about Harrison Ford. (Oddly enough, Google News reports the Goldblum rumour as having originated on a NZ site. Was it you, Tom?!)

I'm beginning to fear for Kevin Bacon.

Compare and contrast The Rolling Stones or US

    I mean U2.

Oh, and apparently Harrison Ford is dead too... Forget about "if looks could kill", I'm happy Twitter isn't lethal. :)

  • JP Hansen,

1982: I remember going to bed at my usual time around 8:30, but knowing Thriller was debuting at 10pm on Television Two. I was 10 years old, and managed to stay awake. I had a the family's old B&W TV in my room.

I'd managed to keep my eyes open, and was just settling in to the intro, when my folks busted me.

I made a good argument, though , because they let me watch it - I guess having no idea it was 1/2 an hour long and pretty scary.

Good times, good times. Music videos as cultural events just don't happen any more.

And here's a strange YouTube clip - James Brown, Jacko and Prince. Though Prince's bloody guitar didn't work.

In case you didn't pick it from the link above, the same "60-foot fall from the Kauri Cliffs" has also not killed Tom Hanks, Tom Cruise and Harrison Ford.

  • Rich Lock,

I recall an interview where Gérard Depardieu was asked why so many of his films -- and he does a lot -- are utter crap, and the answer was rather endearing. He likes to eat and drink, and not from the cheap end of the menu either. He just can't afford to turn down anything he's offered.

My respect for Mr Depardieu rose to an almost infinite amount when I read about one of his heart attacks (brought on by the lifestyle you describe).

Having suffered this heart attack, which turned out to be bad enough to eventually necessitate a quadruple bypass, he hopped on his motorbike, and rode himself to the hospital.

    Respec'.

The man has sold 750 million albums. Anybody want to bet how many he's going to sell in the next twelve months? I have a feeling the estate will pull through somehow.

They'll have to rename 'HIStory: past, present and future' though.

Best just call it 'past', now, eh?

    Too soon?

From past precedent, death sells for megastars. It's worked for John Lennon, Tupac Shakur, Notorious BIG, and The Ramones, among others.

I heard "the tour's not cancelled, but he'll just be playing Thriller" which I thought was pretty funny.

I shall refrain from posting up the one or two fouler (but effin' funny) ones I've already heard, out of respect.

Google News reports the Goldblum rumour as having originated on a NZ site.

    Yeah, this one.

Had me wondering for a sec there, because it's not a hoax site. but they obviously fell for one.

  • Jonathan Maze,

I remember in '77 settling in to watch the Flintstones on TV after school and seeing that Elvis Presley had died. They had interrupted normal programming which was a big deal back and had interviews with distraught middle aged women which I remember struck me as pretty interesting. We used to get the Las Vegas Heavy weight fights interrupting the Flintstones about once a year too if I recall rightly.

Whatever MJ did he certainly did it well. He has world-class once-in-a-life-time weird at the end.

Aaargh, never knew that. Totally gutted :( I grew up on Swells and the NME. He did the best letters pages ever. Weird day.

  • James Littlewood*,

I always liked Greg Tate's take on him:

part of the tyke’s appeal was being able to simulate being lost in the hot sauce way before he was supposed to know what the hot sauce even smelt like

Craig: true, the guy didn't keep his moral centre of gravity quite where the rest of us did. But then, he was never really one of us, was he? He wasn't even one of them, whoever they might be.

As that other Jacko said in Easy Rider: You tell someone they not free, they'll hate you for it. But you show them a truly free person, they gonna be terrified by just what they see.

Shit, really? I actually met the guy up at NME once. Genuine no-airs-and-graces friendly bloke -- which you couldn't say for everyone who wrote for the music rags.

Damn shame. He was younger than me.

    Current Twitter trend chart.

Goldblum still there in urban myth stylee. Just above MTV: I understand it was MTV Australia that unleashed this latest round of "movie star dies after falling off Kauri Cliffs".

Poor old Farrah's down the chart.
