  • Deborah,

    organic free-rage red meat

Please, please tell me that this was deliberate, and not just a typo, because I loves it. ’Though possibly I love it even more if it is a (revealing) typo.

And because I just can’t summon your wonderful use of … ahem… colourful language, I shall have say something very simple to show my agreement with you.

    “Just so.”

  • David Herkt,

I found the whole thing quite fascinating. You've covered most of the points. I was really interested in the knee-jerk and idiotic underbelly of Aotearoa/New Zealand that it exposed. Robyn Malcolm delivered a number of cogent points and I'd easily nominate her for the best sound-bytes of the election thus far. She made John Key's 'Show me the money' line look like the braying of ass. I loved the fact that a lot of reaction was focused on the way she looked. FFS! A photo, chosen by the Herald, to lead, with - I would suggest, some agenda - is the basis of public reaction? And the line thrown out that she is 'just an actor'? The All Blacks are just the All Blacks but it hasn't stopped them from being used and abused by every photo-opping politician possible.

I'd love a long opinion piece from someone on the subject 'Robyn Malcolm and What Passes For Political Opinion In A/NZ' because she is that unlikely touchstone whose involvement tends to point to truths. The fairly despicable rounding on her for our government hocking off our employment law to the Warner Bros/Peter Jackson blackmail was, it seems, just the beginning. This stouch is Let's Kill The Messenger Round Two.

And then Cameron Brewer... Yet another unpleasant personality in the too-long roster of contemporary vileness. Looking around the near abandoned shopping precinct in Newmarket shows how effective he was as a paid spruiker. I am bewildered by his apparent support. Doesn't work well with others, I would suggest. If we applied his 'too partisan' logic on Robyn Malcolm's opinion, Brewer shouldn't be allowed to speak or receive a public wage.

But, yes, an interesting affair which is too unpleasantly revealing of a New Zealand contemporary mindset to be entirely comfortable...

It would be fair to say that Brewer is and has always been a spruiker for himself.

I could, but I’d be lying. Oh, wait… this is policy. I am the love child of Oscar Wilde and Dorothy Parker! Bow before my punny bone! Yadda yadda…

I loved the fact that a lot of reaction was focused on the way she looked.

I really didn’t, but any post about the kind of causal media misogyny female politicans of all stripes have to eat would be a Dada sound poem – BLAARGH GAG BLURGH AAAAARGH GRRRR BANG-BANG and so on.

‘Battle of the Babes’ is the best angle the Herald can come up with for a report on the Auckland Central race? Got my issues with both Adern and Kaye, but damn… And as for Silent T’s widely-reported crack about Judith Collins last Friday? Ugh – when you’re on air with Paul Henry and 1) he’s not the biggest turd blossom in the studio and 2) you’ve given Judith Collins the opportunity to occupy the moral high ground and show considerable class? Damn, you’ve had a bad day.

Possibly. But it's more about getting himself in the Herald at least once a week.

These days he doesn't have to put out one of his press releases: he just blurts something on Twitter.

“long-time Green Party supporter throws out organic free-rage red meat to party faithful at campaign launch”

Sounds like that moment in TV's Sledge Hammer! where said title character uses the epithet, "yoghurt-eating creeps!"

No, not this one, ever, and those whom I know who have heard of him, they are very few, say in a small voice a word that is not very nice.
The fact that he got airtime is what interests me most, see other thread for - How did he get those wonderful toys?
Later, oh thank you for the tweets from Cam, impressive guy, would love to see a face-off with Robyn, at the town hall, debate style.

I find it interesting to compare the reporting of this event in the Herald with the reporting by Fairfax

Somehow Fairfax managed to not see the vitriolic attack, the savaging and the broadside.

I used to hang in Newmarket, and Parnell, when there was a surf shop in Teed Street. I dated there, hung out, drank, ya know, caught the train when we moved out to the ghetto ;-). My daughter did the same, more shopping though, but what those guys have done to Newmarket and Parnell through sheer greed and aggrandizement, makes my blood boil.

An actor criticising National is about as unsurprising as a farmer criticising Labour. There is no news value in it at all.

I concede the smack-down, but it was slightly better than “I’d rather pop my hetero cherry with Judith Collins than shag that smirking arse-faced infant.” (Hitting SAVE DRAFT and having a cup of coffee is my friend.) Oh, well there’s always David Parker – dull but reliable – to be the functional adult on Labour’s front bench.

In related news, Paul Henry is finally doing his civic duty for once. Sometimes the 'brain' drain isn't always a bad thing.

With any luck we’ll get the Streisand Effect.

I wonder if the Steven Joyce affect is to keep trivia on the headlines so that in the smoke screen the dumb voters don't notice the lack of key Key substance. For example this morning Mr Key was interviewed unusually on Morning Report. The ineptness or complicitness of the the interviewers allowed Mr Key to avoid answering any questions.

And then it hit me. Mr Key is a clone of Winston Peters!

  • Steve Withers,

Cameron Brewer lived down to my expectations of him with his comments about Robyn Malcolm. I had given him the benefit of the doubt until now....but that sentiment is now fading. It's a shame he's the ONLY Auckland Councillor who got more than 50% of the vote in his ward. Most of the rest (13 of 20) didn't break 30% of the vote. On that basis it looks like he'll be free to be a prat for a good while to come if he chooses to stay in local politics.

The Herald's editorial strategy seems to be:

    1. Ignore National's faults.
    2. Magnify Labour;s faults.
    3.Collapse the Green vote.

Check tomorrow's front page for the re-play.

  • Jonty,

The Herald really should give up the pretence and change it's banner to "The Official Propaganda Sheet of the NZ National Party" -- coupe of weeks ago it openly advised Epsom voters to cast their lot in with Banks (or miss out on an extra bunch of MPs). NZH's monopoly makes a mockery of Craig's claim of a free press.
