  • Sacha, in reply to Alfie,

"We have a lot of programmes analysing the news". That level of public scrutiny has all but disappeared from NZ media.

eg: only 15 episodes of Media Take funded this year.

  • Rob Stowell, in reply to Alfie,

there is still a taste for public service broadcasting in NZ. Unfortunately it’s no longer offered as an option.

RNZ National - they rate ok. But are influential (IMO :)) well beyond the simple numbers.

  • Mr Mark, in reply to Tom Semmens,

Yep, Tom. Whenever I'm in the UK or mainland Europe (or, indeed, just across the Tas), it drives home just how freaking diabolical our mainstream (and, in particular, broadcast ) media is.

And I always feel honour-bound to point out to overseas visitors (complaining about our MSM's woeful quality) that it didn't use to be this way. In fact, in the 70s and 80s, it was often pretty damn good.

The Spanish Left, incidentally, have always impressed me with their vibrancy, their sense of urgency and their intellectual rigour.

We did have a semblance of public service TV, but even visiting Australians were often appalled by the studied parochialism of NZ's newspapers. Unity Books' approach to the Wilson & Horton Herald over its lack of serious book reviews triggered the terse reply "So we don't play your little game. So what?" 1980s Herald editorials were often showcases of literal in-your-face senility, as if that was some kind of reward for a lifetime of hackery.

Despite his strong critique of the GOP, though, Obama added a caveat:
"There are thoughtful conservatives - good people in the Republican Party, good people who are Republican voters who care about poverty and they care about climate, and don't resort to insults, and are troubled by what's happening inside their own party. I know them. I've talked to them. But they've got to acknowledge why this happened - because some of them have been writing that, 'Well, the reason our party is going crazy is because of Obama.' Which is a pretty novel idea. The notion is Obama drove us crazy."
"Now, the truth is, what they really mean is their reaction to me was crazy and now it has gotten out of hand. But that's different. I didn't cause the reaction. The reaction is something that they have to take responsibility for and then figure out how do we make an adjustment."
