  • Rob Hosking,

Has anyone successfully dried glass using newspaper?

I use newspaper for the car windows. It works fine, on the about two occasions a year I do it.

Here's my tip - for what it's worth. When walking along Takapuna Beach with dogs offleash, do not smile.

Pff, Jackie, people look at me funny when I dance in the supermarket too - but why else would they be playing music?

I miss the local supermarket wars, when (pre-merger) Woolworths and Foodtown were both opens 24 hours. If you went there at 3am, you would totally see people dancing.

I refuse to comment on why I was at the supermarket at 3am.

Heh. I sing along to the muzak, or whistle. I just hate that people get all po faced when you show any sort of joy in life. It makes me do whatever is annoying them even more. Went to a course a while ago, and my friend and I were laughing at something. This woman looked at me, specifically, like she'd seen something hideous, and it just made me laugh harder, while I was looking at her looking at me. Bloody joykilling bastards.

  • Islander,

    A tip, and a tip'o't'hat-

*newspaper, lightly dampened & dipped in a little ash is the really easy way to clean logfire burners' fireglass windows .

*Jackie et al: when I go to any kind of city (or even large town these days) I have to stop myself from giving other pedestrians a smile & a wave (if I dont want to talk.) In the very small places I mainly inhabit, you are thought *extremely* rude if you dont so acknowledge another human: in the cities, you get scowled at for unwanted...friendliness?

    * supermarkets in the wee sma' hoors- there's a goodie 24hr Countdown in Dunedin, just a block or so from the Leviathan Hotel: I had more interesting - & odd- & one appalling - chats there than I did in 2 months at OU at summer school...and yep, on 2 occaisions, people danced - one a ringringarosie with 5 participants & the other a lovely slow waltz by two young men with iPod earbuds who could really dance and made really sure not to impede anyone - o cool!

  • Deborah,

Jackie, it's you and me (and Danielle, of course). I... um... sing when I wander through the markets here. A rather nice medieval sounding piece. Quietly - pianissimo - but loud enough for me to hear. I like singing.

People do give me odd looks from time to time, but I tell myself that's because I'm singing the alto line.

Church cnr Countdown is 24hrs and at 3am you are likely to see students in their PJs - sooo 1st year.

Actually you'll see 1st yrs at Countdown in their PJs 24/7.

    You'll see drunks at 3am. No they're 24/7 too.

More likely to have people parked in the wheelchair parking after 5pm, cause that's when they lock the cripples in right(!). Damn 24/7 again.

We need to seriously reassess our Firearms laws.

The myopic focus of the 'Git Tough on Crime' crowds unwillingness to address firearms really angers me.

This licenced gun owner Maybe has armed a Battalion of armed criminals.

(We can quibble whether this is Company plus or Battalion minus, but this is a shit load of firepower in the wrong hands)

    Little rant over.

Andrew, ordering a short or long black is always advisable when going somewhere new in Sydney.

...and is never advisable when going anywhere in the USA.

I've heard various accounts of strategies for getting what you want here, but maintain that the best payoff comes from my approach: just learn to drink 'coffee' their way.

There is something to be said for very, very fresh filter coffee in an American diner. I will give them that.

(And the New Lynn Foodtown is open 24 hours, isn't it?)

I am totally late to this but:

    1. has anyone mentioned ctrl+enter when typing in urls? It adds the http://www. and the .com (should that be your destination)

    2. I used to love shopping in the wee hours at Victoria Park New World. We used to dance and sing and watch the America's Cup teams doing similar things.

In the address bar, simply type the middle part of a web address, then press ctrl+enter.

So if you wanted to go to http://www.google.com just type in "google" and press ctrl and enter it'll do the rest for you.

Sadly it won't do .co.nz or .net

This must be a PC trick. Does nothing on my mac.

  • Hadyn Green,

It works in Firefox2.x and 3 and (__shudder__) IE.

In Firefox you could also just hit enter for most websites. That does a google search so just typing (for example) "google" will get you to google.com.

Hadyn & Paul (and others who spend a fair chunk of time online) try Opera.

Lots of shortcuts and lots of innovation. Keyboard arrow keys become "last page", "next page" rather than having to use the mouse. Do away with the Google toolbar by using the Address bar and your search term prefixed with a simple "g " or any of the other supported search engines including a History search ("h ") and find in page search ("f "). Firefox seems to follow where Opera has boldly gone before...

When the bathroom mirror is completely dry, smear some of an unused block of soap over the mirror and wipe it off with a clean, dry cloth. This stops the mirror fogging up.
