TV ads they were playing on their big screen through the new speaker system
«shudder»
Best quality badness in NZ stadium: Frank Sinatra and 2-player Playstation on the screen at the first ever one-dayer at the cake tin.
Worst: every Highlanders game. The ABBA and Boney-M tribute bands are almost tolerable, kind of neat to have gay icons at rugby, but the franchise theme ('Otago Highlanders, that's our name') is a shocker. ORFU: in the unlikely event you are reading this, I promise to stop boycotting the games if you get a nice piece of music. No lyrics. -
Many women became targets of violence as their partners took out their frustrations following the All Blacks' rugby World Cup loss.
Women's refuges say the demand for their services has been since Sunday's defeat. "We've heard from police there has been an increase in domestic violence and they're our biggest source of referrals," said Catherine Delore, spokeswoman for the National Collective of Independent Women's Refuges.
"The game isn't the only reason for abuse but it's always part of the excuse. The abusers tend to take out their anger on their nearest and dearest."
So, how 'many' is many? Delore doesn't provide a figure, just offers a vague "demand is [up]". And did she even offer that, or is it the opinion of the reporter? The only actual quote from Delore is "We've heard from police there has been an increase in domestic violence and they're our biggest source of referrals." So ... have they actually had any 'extra' referrals as a result of the AB loss, or are they just saying 'the Police have told us there's been an increase in domestic violence'. So was that an 'official' statement from the Police, or just a comment from some cop on the phone she was speaking with?
I know I'm not winning friends by going down this route, but the story pisses me off because it's possibly a beat up ie it seems very anecdotal but it was still picked up internationally. Even the hosts on Channel 9's brekky show were talking about it, as if we are a nation of wife beaters. Are we?
-
...but it was still picked up internationally.
This after Key making the international stage for a mere gaffe. The world must be hanging out for news, or we really are important. Hard to know.
My experience of the RWC has been mostly positive, apart from the loss that is.
I'm not the world's greatest rugby fan (and a bit of a contrarian) and don't come from a rugby family but I was entertained and thrilled and didn't have a problem with the nationalism.
I think the national antham should be changed to Pokarekare Ana, the melody at least, maybe the lyrics could be changed. Oz really missed out by not going for Waltzing Matilda.
-
Are we?
I would like to know too. There must be some information on this. You would think that between Women's Refuge and the police there would be something a bit more clear cut.
-

Well, I do have my doubts - though I've done more than enough ranting over the years about the amount of bullshit that gets printed as 'news' because reporters, and their editors, are statistically illiterate and functionally innumerate. Or, to be ice cold about it, that careful reporting doesn't sell half as well as a sensational pull quote about a holocaust of domestic violence as a country mourns blah blah blah.
I don't want to beat up on Catherine Delore - she's a spokeswoman for Independent Women's Refuges, and quite obviously is bringing an agenda to the table, like every other lobbyist and media mouthpiece out there. But InternationalObserver just asked precisely the questions any halfway competent reporter should have asked, or had their editor reading 'em the riot act.

"...That kind of weird anachronistic macho criticism makes me all the more fond of Dan Carter..."
I'll think you'll find i was shocked at his doing it in public, if I were him i would probably sobbd my heart out back in the hotel room when no one was around. But I would like to think I could keep my dignity intact in public, on TV, and while the game was still going on. And if you think expecting an All Black to retain his composure in public is somehow encouraging family violence, then you are an idiot.
Rugby IS an anachronistic macho game. Its a game for men, its about male values, thats why men love it. And like the joy of stroking a proud new moustache (is movember happening this year? if so - gents remember to get the facial fuzz going!) most females just don't get it. Men in this country are not allowed to lecture women on childbirth or question the amount of money spent on breast cancer prevention vs the amount spent on prostate cancer prevention, so keep your views on All Blacks crying to yourself. its an issue for us guys to argue over.
I admit it, I love the game, which is odd because I can't stand a lot of the boff head male culture that come with it. We have made rugby our sport and its warp and woof of our culture. Probably its to important but much that is good and much that is bad about us and our culture is reflected in our attitude to the game. Unlike so many of our ruling and intellectual elites who have some sort of weird self-loathing I actually like my fellow New Zealanders for who we are, and i like rugby because it is part of that. I love watching the Maori channel just for its unabashed celebrations of New Zealandness, free of the intellectual middle class cultural cringe like this PA column.
One thing this event has really opened my eyes to though is how much a lot of rugby people in Europe loath us. As a patriotic and proud New Zealander I hope we remember the patronising sarcasm and unalloyed joy in the All Black's downfall a lot of the UK and Irish media have reflected. They knew it hurt and they have left no stone unturned to try and rub it in. I think we've handled the French victory over us with a lot more dignity than they've handled the gloating at our loss.
And come 2011, I want us to ram their words back down their supercillious throats.

I rest my case. God is an Iron.

Wowwwwwwwweeeeeee. You just went totally crazy in public! Awesome! Your ass is *grass*, dude. That's so offensive that it's actually almost hilarious. You're serious?
(By the way, I think that when you resort to the 'you chicks are not entitled to talk about this' card, you automatically lose the argument. It's like a Godwin thing. Call it Friedan's Law if you like.)

Thanks Danielle - you sum up Tom's rant nicely.
[I've just got off a race boat on the Waitemata harbour- Wednesday nite yacht racing has started. {Blush} I actually have the privilege of choosing the boat I wish to race on.. Nothing to do with gender.] Tonight the five guys and me did well -'nuff said.
My knowledge of sport in general is also appreciated.. and debated.
Tom.. that mysoginist post will go down in PA History. -
so keep your views on All Blacks crying to yourself. its an issue for us guys to argue over.
One night I went to GPK restaurant on Dominion Road, blissfully ignorant of the big game that had finished at Eden Park just a few blocks away.
Soon the restaurant was filled with people having a post-match meal, and I was surprised at how many tables of women there were, obviously having a "girls night out" at the rugby.
Take all the women out of an Eden Park crowd and you'd end up with a stadium full of men singing "Why does love do this to me".
There are women out there who give a damn about rugby, the All Blacks, and the men who play the game.

Heh heh .... and then there are men (like me) out there who don't give a damn about rugby, the All Blacks, and the men who play the game.
(Not that it stops me from chuckling at the sight of 'real blokes' crying over a freakin' game of Rugby) -
Tom.. that mysoginist post will go down in PA History.
Really?
I didn't think what he was saying was mysoginistic, but then as a male it's possible that my gender precludes me from seeing Tom for the Nazi he is.
Lighten up. Do you and Danielle really believe a man can lecture women on childbirth or question the amount of money spent on breast cancer prevention vs the amount spent on prostate cancer prevention, without at least one woman present rolling her eyes and saying "Omigod! I can't believe you [a man] just said that!".
-
Danielle, Tom had his rant which swirled around for all to see and marvel at but threats fall into the "Theatre" bucket (I'm still trying to get my union card).
The best thing with cancer is to be positive, right?
-
Rugby IS an anachronistic macho game. Its a game for men
Um... isn't the New Zealand *women's* rugby team the one that is famous for always winning?
-
threats fall into the "Theatre" bucket
What threat? I am confused. Oh, 'your ass is grass'? That was more of a prediction, when I wrote it: I mean, come on - he just told Tze Ming and all the women of Public Address that they aren't allowed to talk about something. Who *wouldn't* predict carnage? :) Still, yes, unintentional theatre. Sorry.
I didn't think what he was saying was mysoginistic
Oooooookaaaayyyy. Also, I'm finding this part of the thread very, very funny in an incredulous kind of way, so I don't think I could get much 'lighter' in mood, at this point. Especially considering I was just told, seriously, by an actual person, to shut up about something because I'm a woman. Oh, and that one of my interests is gender-inappropriate. I feel like I have been magically transported to 1957, but with Teh Interweb!
(I can't believe I actually have to make this disclaimer, but of course men are able to discuss breast cancer/prostate cancer or childbirth or whatever they want. Good discussion should not be gender-exclusive one way or the other.)
-
Tom, it's Thursday already. You promised you'd be alright by Tuesday.
-
I mean, come on - he just told Tze Ming and all the women of Public Address ...
Probably enough for a rugby team!

I think Tom's heading for the bottom of a maul at the moment.
(I was going to say receiving a rucking, but, well...) -
Probably enough for a rugby team!
For sure!
I was quite happy for men to have a **men's discussion**I was looking forward to hearing what the men here had to say about "the manliness or otherwise of crying in public". Then you went and said this:
so keep your views on All Blacks crying to yourself. its an issue for us guys to argue over.
....now I am too busy laughing to think of anything to contribute anyway. But seriously, if you (Tom) are uncomfortable with that personally, I can respect that but you can't try to impose that on all men.
-
I think Tom's heading for the bottom of a maul at the moment.
(I was going to say receiving a rucking, but, well...)LOL this thread is awesome.

Men in this country are not allowed to lecture women on childbirth
Male or female, lecturing someone on childbirth just sounds kind of rude. (I've seen women just shut down and go into grrr mode when another woman starts lecturing them on the proper way they should be doing whatever with their baby.)
But engaging in a conversation on such matters, well, if it were me, I'd welcome it.
-
Absolutely. I've often thought that some ominous dub would make for a great lead-up to a big test-match.
This would be an obvious choice.
-
Tom said: <quote>which is odd because I can't stand a lot of the boff head male culture that come [sic] with it.</ quote>
Well obviously.
You are a shining light of anti-boffhead male culture.
Awesome. What? Oh, best go get the scones out of the oven...the menz have got some important rugby to discuss.
-
The rugby threads here have been easily the most-trafficked for the month, and Monday was probably our biggest day for the whole of 2007.
I was going to say... that's great, and I'm pleased for you, especially because I know that will up your advertising revenue, and unlike the boofheads who think everything on the net should be free and are not prepared to pay for good quality opinion and entertainment by having a few ads appear on the site, I'm delighted to be able to see all the ads, read the great content, and take part in the fantastic discussions, but maybe rugby has gotten all the hits in the last month because the rest of PA has been a bit, well, quiet... so the rugby-atheists among us haven't had much to read, and even Tze Ming Mok's post was about bloody rugby, and I am so over it, and nationalism, and all those things.
That's what I was going to say, along with "Welcome back to the land of the living, all you rugby folks. hope you had a good time."
But then I read all of this thread, and found Tom's rant, and Danielle's response.
Look, if anyone wants to form a rugby team from the women who participate in PA, I'll be in. I'm about 165cm tall, and I weight around 58 kilos... so what do you reckon I should play? Prop. Danielle, do you fancy the wing? What about you, Kowhai?
Tom, you might get people asking you what you have to contribute to a discussion on childbirth, if you have never been there or done that, but as far as I know, conversation here is open to EVERYONE. Even conversations about rugby. And the funding of prostate cancer research and treatment.
Right. I'm off to do the vacuuming. And some baking.
-

__**And That's The Truth, Ruth!__**
I made a point of staying off AB threads, and in the rare moments I didn't I felt dirty afterwards. PAS is like P - you think you can stop, but find you can't.
