Nerdcore in New Zealand

  • Joshua Drummond,

Here's New Zealand's finest (and possibly only) Nerdcore artist, MC Stormtroopa, strutting his stuff on Nightline with pals Chewbacca and Darth Vader. Watch, be enlightened, and may the Force be with you.

  • Russell Brown,

Nice. Good cap too. The video I mean, not his hat. Okay, that too ...

  • Robyn Gallagher,

It pleases me that the reporter had the Southland R, so every time he said nerdcore, it was nerrrrrrdcore.

It also pleases that there is nerdcore comin' straight outta Hamilton.

But why isn't there more Aotearoa nerdcore? I mean, I know the gots the skillz that pay the bills, but surely there must be others out there.

And while not local and not strictly nerdcore, I thought I'd share my favourite nerdcore MC - Ms Leslie Hall, keeper of the gem sweaters.

  • Joshua Drummond,

It is a good cap, but I can't take the credit - David Farrier puts all his stuff on YouTube, as far as I can tell. It's a pretty cool move, shows some of the peeps at TV3 are down wit' da kidz0r.
Incidentally, I'm the wookie. I'm very proud of the fact that all the wookie noises are actually me.
And did you get the hidden joke in his hat? I wouldn't have, except he explained it to me.

  • Jeremy Andrew,

BTW, I'm obviously not quite nerdcore enough to get the hat. 419, I'd get the Frontalot shout out, but 501 nup.

  • Joshua Drummond,

The 501st is an ultra-geeky reference to the 501st Squadron, Darth Vader's elite team of stormtroopers. I had no idea, either.
And yeah, it's cool to see Hamilton on the news for something "cultural" that isn't foolish boy racers or the Riff Raff statue.

  • Jeremy Andrew,

Ohhh, that makes sense. I was leaning towards a reference to Han Solo's favourite type of jeans.
And, yeah, I quite like that we have the Riff statue, but now you mention it, I can't recall any other newsworthy cultural offerings from here. Scientifical, yes; geeky, sometimes; agricultural, more often than not; but cultural, not so much.

It's strange cos I lived in Hamilton for the first 22 years of my life, and the best thing about it was all the cultural stuff.

You often had to search it out, but amid all the bogan-based stuff, there were really cool bands, a professional theatre company, crazy raves, and enough to keep me entertained.

  • Jeremy Andrew,

Its still here - the garage bands, the theater, the oddballs in Garden place of a lunchtime. But it comes from and stays in Hamilton, it doesn't seem to travel, and seldom if ever makes the news, even in the "light hearted oddity to round out the bad news of the day" segment at the end of Nightline.
We can haz a culcha, it just ain't newsworthy. (V8s <> culture)

Hamilton - a great place to live, but you wouldn't want to visit there. :-)
