Phoenix Foundation - Bright Grey (dir. Taika Waititi)

  • Damian Christie,

This is about as Wellywood as it gets, the new Phoenix Foundation single off the album Happy Ending, which is out October 8, directed by Taika Waititi (Eagle vs Shark etc)

  • Russell Brown,

Video feedback! Flying logos! Clunky bluescreening! Big white headphones! Whatever that computery font is called!

  • Robyn Gallagher,

Whatever that computery font is called!

It looks like it's based on the legendary E-13B magnetic ink character recognition font. I like the idea that the Phoenix Foundation's stage front could be scanned by a giant robot, who would be pleased to discover the name of the band making such delightful tunes.

What I liked most 'bout the video was the cameo by Mr Waititi, nodding appreciatively from his DeLorean. (But I'm trying to figure out if he's a visitor from the past or the future.)

  • Jackie Clark,

I love the way that all of The Phoenix Foundations' songs are so different. Very talented chappies, they are.

  • Chockasunday,

This needs to be a chant on the terraces for the Wellington Phoenix soccer team.
Hoohoo - Hoohoo - The Phoenix win today!

  • Jolisa,

And a synthesiser called Roland! (Except in this case, Poland??!)

And the Tron style flying grid! Awesome. Those headphones are totally ELO. And Taika as the big money 80s businessman nodding as the EPs fly off the shelves... Love it.

The only thing it's missing is a cheesy narrative acted (badly) by the lead singer and some random girly. As immortally satirised here:
