Telecom 1987

  • Tristan,

Here is a fantastic clip from when Telecom launched the mobile phone in 1987.

It has a Naff factor of 10!

    I love the briefcase version....

But look at how rapidly the technology has advanced, changed and been accepted in the last 10 years.

  • Robyn Gallagher,

Hey, I've seen this video before!

In the '80s my dad was a manager at Telecom. I was involved with some sort of speech and drama performance evening, and Telecom Hamilton had kindly come to the party with some sponsorship for the hall rental. In exchange for that, this video was shown at the beginning of the evening.

I was probably about 12 at the time and I remember being horribly embarrassed that Dad was being really embarrassing by showing this dumb video about dumb phones in front of my friends.

But parents and kids alike werevery impressed and ooed and aahed in the right places.

And it turns out they were right - it did revolutionise business.

  • Andre Alessi,

A friend of mine is a trainer at Telecom, and he's been playing this in every single training session.

    Every. Single. One.

It's enough to make a grown man sob for mercy.

  • jon_knox,

found a Time magazine from 1978 which contains much information about (suitcased sized) "home video recorders". As ever the issue is full of American politics, ponders the role of women in the military, features the new pope. It all seems remarkably familiar.

  • Gary Hutchings,

The bag phone they show, until T/com announced they would pull the plug on 025, was still a very sought after item in rural areas as it had a 3w transmitter in it, most of the tiny phones today are only a couple of hundred mW,

Those original bad boys were designed for when cells were much larger, and thus were great for marginal coverage.

  • Matt Jeffs,

Great stuff. Definitly gets a 'naffness' rating of 10 out of 10!

  • Keith Ng,

You know, I've never had a cellular network explained to me before. That was actually really interesting.

With the comments here, I was expecting something much cheesier ... it's kinda nice to know.
