  • Hard News: Dealer's Choice, an oral…, in reply to James George,

everyone thought frog tucker n plonk were the bees knees which shows how naive we all were.

Thinking about the alternatives at the time, not much comes up under top food...….
The hungry horse, Tony's steak house? Bonapartes for the Politicians and grandees.

    Naïve?. possibly.

Back on track I can recall Thai sticks in the early eighties usually stripped of any seeds and trimmed down depending on how far down the chain you were. The days of sitting in a circle with 2 or 3 jays going round doing strong lung impressions are still with me.

Dope droughts, a bit like carless days really.

The past is a different country as they say.

  • Hard News: Synthetics: We need to stop…, in reply to Simon Armstrong,

We aren't talking about legalizing synthetics though.
The cat is out of the bag as far as synthetics are concerned and the main issue is the health effects which illegality is not addressing.
The evidence for dealing with these harms points to openness not lock them up and ineffective posturing.

The old saying about doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results springs to mind.

  • Hard News: Synthetics: We need to stop…, in reply to Simon Armstrong,

Cannabis, loathe it or love it you can't ignore it.
Keeping it illegal hasn't helped has it?
Best to regulate and treat any issues as a health problem and not a law and order election posture I'd have thought.
Perhaps if it had been legal and controlled our synthetic problem wouldn't have occurred almost certainly not to the same extent.
As for hand wringing over child welfare and mental health how about the elephant in room warning re social harm, alcohol.
The lowering of the drinking age working out ok for you?
The treatment of cannabis with punitive sanctions has allowed criminal elements to thrive and given them the opportunity to go on to supply other far more harmful products cos it's all illegal anyway.
The misinformation in regard of it's harms has caused a credibility issue when authorities speak about other drugs.
I'm not saying that there are no issues regarding cannabis use but they are not as bad as has been stated ( reefer madness, for Christs sake! ) and using the law will not help with this.
In effect the best way to deal with cannabis is to open it up and deal honestly with it and not make it illegal and have the cops and courts as the first line of control.
It's here and it isn't going away.

  • Hard News: Dirty Politics, in reply to simon g,

To me it just comes across as a stupid dick move.

If that's the best he can do well...….why bother.

Bad faith attacks on drug policy and crime rates seem to be his modus.

Does he have a coherent political philosophy that doesn't boil down to tried and true lauranorder and taxes bad?

The anonymity of a lot of these political postings lets malicious players get away with outright falsehoods.
Surely like a lot of political ads in the traditional media a real life breathing human with contact details etc should have to associated with any ads from which Mr Zuckerburg is presumably making money from hosting.
Time to look at this aspect of their operation as a publisher and not some hands free neutral platform.
The devil is in the detail I know.

  • Hard News: These things we must now change,

    https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2019/mar/20/facebook-google-twitter-theyd-still-be-dreadful-without-the-fascists

No care and no responsibility from our modern digital masters, you know the ones, they don't like paying taxes or cleaning up their mess.

I think we're on the way to dystopia and not sunlit uplands unless we start getting a handle on some big issues that our 'leaders' are failing to properly address.

These are not easy issues I know but it's a requirement of the position if you're an elected representative to show some moral strength and clear vision.

Climate change looking at you also.

The levels of complacency in our parliament is best described as cynical.

    sorry for the slight threadjack.

  • Speaker: Cannabis: make it legal but…, in reply to bob daktari,

allowing “big pot” to dominate a potential market is however only one potential outcome from legalization, the one thing I’ve not seen anyone support.
Will we see an astroturf campaign of some sort come out of the tobacco/alcohol business groups?
Who has the ear of the relevant decision makers?
When push comes to shove will the Nats and Winnies mob actually let legalization happen?
To get through Parliament one of these parties will have to vote for it or will it be a conscience vote.
A large majority in favour of some form of legalization will be the best option to go ahead.
A lot of hard yards ahead methinks.
