  • Hard News: Music: Avantdale is something…,

A night not to be missed in Lyttelton - tomorrow Sat 24 November. MEDaL Dave Mulcahy (JPSE, Superette, Cranks , Sexy Animals ), Mark Whyte (Into the Void, Sexy Animals) and John Billows (Renderers, Cranks, The Ether, Dark Matter ) and, after a fairly lengthy absence from live shows, The Terminals play the Wunderbar.

The Terminals I’ve heard are for this set (and a second outing in Dunedin on Dec 1) veering right away from Antiseptic territory - which has dominated the set in recent outings - to knock out favs from the back catalogue including that gem Uncoffined...

Hard to find any MEDaL on-line but...with Superette's Tiger getting the redux /re-release treatment, here's a live recording from the late and lamented King's Arms, Saskatchewan...

Yeh, pretty depressing Ian isn't it. Aside from the Horncastle Arena- which I avoid like the plague, there's really only the Theatre Royal, Aurora Centre and the Foundry bar at UoC which count as bigger venues.

For live music fans who prefer gigs, like me, at the other end of the spectrum, there normally plenty on offer each weekend. Like this one tonight at Lyttleton's Hell Fire Club Replicate! A Celebration of the Hip Priest.

About 5 bands or one-offs for the night will Extricate from the back catalogue of the Fall. Dave Mulcahy is leading the charge, Dave Imlay (Galaxy) also in the mix, some 70s/80s offerings from Marquis Myth and I believe Stu Page who's in town will take to the kit in one of them.

I'd wager, however, that none of them will be quite as wild as what Christchurch Art Gallery is putting on tonight to marks its 15th birthday on the current site. ...They're some groovy fuckers at that gallery.

You bet! It's a 5-piece ITV this time round - Ronnie 'Quasi' van Hout has returned for vocal duties. Christine Voice & Jackson Harry (2/3 of Colt 45) will bring some Snappery vibes to the mix.

I'll be departing the Garden City for RSD in AKL. It could well be the final RSD held at Galaxy Records, at least as we know it. It's up for sale

I'll do a full rundown of Record Store Day happenings in next week's post, but the lineups are taking shape.

From what I gather, at least four locations are participating: Real Groovy, Southbound, Marbecks and the Cross Street market. Looking forward to it!

Good piece Russell. When you're in Chch next and have the opportunity, would be interesting to get your thoughts on the =ves and -ves of the emerging Chch cycleway network. They are not universally popular by any means.

Is the sharrow concept widespread in Akld? In Chch, they tend to be used in stretches of main roads, e.g. Colombo St, where it's impractical to have a cycleway. My experience with sharrow roads has been mixed and I was nearly run off Colombo St by an angry truckie hooting continuously me to get out of the way! He, like others I've winessed just don't get it. But neither has the education roll-out on sharrows been that good by the CCC.

Also, there's a health and safety inconsistency. While most cycle paths (or stretches on those paths) allow for the cyclist to cross uncontrolled crossings while traffic waits. then unexpectedly, at the next crossing, one may meet a crossing with tiny give way signs (cyclist must give way). No logic there and I've seen one or two close calls.

    “Crocodile infested”

A reference perhaps to the considerable talents of (about that time more or less) Crocodiles' drummer Bruno Lawrence?!

I don’t think that will happen, though, instead they get their first internship in real power.

An I think that is underlined, it speaks volumes really, that the Greens have 98% backing of their 150 or so delegates to make this internship a significant one. They might be kept on after the 'summer break'!

I think Tracey Martin is the real talent there. Knows what she's doing, works well with others.

I was most impressed when I saw her on Back Benches recently. She 'got' climate change - and apparently v good on education.
