  • Hard News: How much speech does it take?, in reply to Kracklite,

Actually, I vaguely remember a short story, probably Irish, about someone who had died in a way that meant that they could not be buried in consecrated ground, so they were buried adjacent to but outside the churchyard. One night, the people of the village came out, tore down the wall, and rebuilt it to enclose the fresh grave.

this gave me the weird but lovely sensation of both smiling and tears welling up simultaneously. Happy and sad.

  • Field Theory: Japan Part Two: It's…,

I visited tokyo about three and a half years ago for a couple of weeks. We were blown away by how amazing it was and had a fantastic time.
One day, while out and about, we wandered into a small 'Swatch' watch shop that was located just inside an inside mall. It was smallish and had clear glass walls that were covered in watches. We stood there for a few minutes looking at the watches expecting a shop assistant to pop back in any second when a gentleman came in, pushed some buttons we had not noticed. The doors closed and the whole 'shop' started moving downwards. When the doors opened we were in the real shop and felt very much like country mice in the big city.
    I bought a watch though!

  • OnPoint: Did you know we're in a recession?,

On the topic of teachers' pay, I do wonder if they'd settle for the extra manglement units and hard caps on class sizes along with a minor pay increase. The impression I'm getting is that most of their gripe relates to class sizes and NCEA workload rather than rates of pay.

For me personally - this is exactly how I feel. Especially the caps on class sizes. I think we could leave negotiating about pay until the next round when hopefully the recession has eased. Pick your battles and all that.
This is also the impression I get from some other teachers. Though I have only heard the opinion of about 20 other teachers individually and directly on this so it is not very precise measurement!

"So in that spirit I apologise unreservedly to Sir Anand and his family, he is a very distinguished man I am a gippo television presenter."

What exactly is PH saying here??

  • Hard News: Morning in Auckland,

it was missing the moustache comment (I think).

It appears from the article that TVNZs response (to the Dikshit clip) is

TVNZ spokeswoman Andi Brotherston said the website was an independent news organisation.

"[It] is part of TVNZ's news and current affairs department, which has its editorial independence enshrined in legislation."

  • Hard News: Hobbit Wars,

    also clarification to DeepRed

If 'National Standards' is merely a Trojan horse to crush the PPTA, why be so secret about it?

PPTA is for post primary and the National Standards are being implemented at primary level.

But you're right about it being messy.

I am currently feeling very disillusioned about having retrained to teach. In my previous career I worked less hours (37.5 hours per week), earned more and TBH it was pretty cruisy. Now as a secondary school teacher I work more hours (averaged over the year), earn less and work WAY harder. However, I knew and accepted it would be this way when I retrained (one year study). What I am now finding absolutely disheartening is the way people like John Key and Anne Tolley are talking about ME - yes I do take it personally!

  • Hard News: Hobbit Wars,

Apologies if this has already been brought up as I haven't read this post and its comments for a day or so now but I saw this on my FB page (written by Robyn Malcolm) and got confused....

Robyn Malcolm (official) Phil its the NZ Actors Equity. Not the Aussies. Run by NZ actors for NZ actors. This Aussie bully boy beef up is simply not the truth and we absolutely do have legal status. It is simply about getting a bottom line for all actors' employmen...t status in NZ which is fair and equitable with the rest of the industry on world terms. It won't hurt the industry, it will improve it for all performers if PJ agrees to discuss and negotiate. There is no intention to hurt the industry or The Hobbit by actors in any sense. With all the very best due respect to Chris and Barney, they are producers, not actors.

  • Southerly: Everybody Needs Good Neighbours,

I'm not surprised she yelled at them with a name like that. In my teaching experience certain names crop up as always presenting challenges in the classroom. Jaydin/Jayden/Jaydan is one of them

our staffroom decided that 'Dylan' was the ultimate for this.
