  • Hard News: Public Address Word of the…,

I see that Google is listed as a noun, but I'm pretty sure I (and others) submitted it as a verb - "to google".

Robyn's use above ("I’ve been googling words and restricting results to the last year ") is the perfect example.

People now say they googled something with Bing, so the verb has escaped its noun somewhat.

I see that it hasn't made the spell checker yet though - it's showing as underlined as I type this.

Cloud (as in "in the cloud")

For the decade "to google" as a verb. Even more ubiquitous than "blog".

Also "yeah yeah yeah" When did we start saying that in threes?

  • Field Theory: In closing,

Why didn't Annie Lennox sing 'Sweet Dreams Are Made of This'?

    Perhaps the lyrics

"Some of them want to use you. Some of them want to get used by you. Some of them want to abuse you? Some of them want to be abused" weren't quite the vibe they were after?

I noted that Eric Idle didn't sing "Always look on the bright side of death...." I loved his face though at the Bollywood bit there. He was awesome.

But what was up with the sound?

I seem to be the person in Chch who’s in favour of the Hagley Oval upgrade

Me too. I loved watching Canterbury Cricket at Hagley Oval when Madonna munted Lancaster Park. In fact, I remember watching Lee Germon play, in the glory days of Canterbury cricket.

I'll trade off a little more development in Hagley, for the huge new "Frame" park from Kilmore to St Asaph. I love the idea of a giant kid's playground down at the end nearest Centennial Pool, and walking through the park to a cosy covered stadium for the rugby.

the absence of any announcement on the town hall

If you watch the video interviews it's clear that they don't yet know the fate of the Town Hall. The arts precinct layout will be more or less spread out depending on whether the Town Hall remains or not. I

Canterbury vs Wellington is all well and good, but A Day on The Green featuring Brooke Fraser and Skrillex is a different story.

Why? It wouldn't take much longer to close the ground for a concert than a cricket match. Why wouldn't listening to music at a cricket ground be lovely? When I first moved to Wellington they held an orchestra/classical sparks type thing at the Basin (which is open for people to walk through still, I believe)

The reality of life in Christchurch post earthquake is actually going to be a decentralised existence lived in big box shopping complexes of K-marts, Mitre 10 Mega stores, Harvey Normans and Pack n Save

To be frank - that was the reality of life pre earthquake for many people. Lots of people didn't go into the city much.

  • Field Theory: Dissension in the ranks,

I was at the CakeTin on Saturday night for the Crusaders game and it does have much to recommend it.

I agree the music is too loud though- it's hard to have a conversation at normal levels. The ground announcer was crap to start with with but got better.

I was looking at the field and said - "Hey, that's Quentin McDonald, when did he come on?" Some time later, the announcer announced he'd come on for Corey Flynn, by which time he'd been replaced by Corey Flynn as an injury cover.

At AMI the ground announcer is awesome. There's a polite announcement when the opposition scores (tone of voice implying it's no big deal), and a more upbeat tone to thhe announcement for Crusaders scores.

When a Crusader scores, they play cool music (which I think may be chosen by the player who has just scored)

When the opposition score it's just a standard piece from memory.

By constrast, every time the Crusaders scored at the Cake Tin, they played defeatist, consolation music. The one I remember is "Always look on the bright side of life" for the bonus point fourth try.

It seemed to be aimed at the crowd - keeping them happy about watching a losing team.

The crowd itself seemed to be more of a "party on a Saturday" crowd than a serious knowledgeable rugby crowd - reminiscent of the sevens. But the "placate the crowd" strategy obviously gets people in the door.

In the meantime I'd be happy paying the licence fee

Me too! In the meantime I enjoy Radio 4 podcasts - get your Andrew Marr fix with Start the Week - it's always excellent.

In our Time with Melvin Bragg is as well, and I still have a soft spot for Desert Island Discs.

Which reminds me, I wonder what's happening on The Archers?

I pondered recently the “things a woman ain’t supposed to see” were.

I concluded Mob hits, and nefarious underworld goings on with Arab Sheikhs and rich playboys dumping bodies off yachts sailing in the Med.

I love live music if my eardrums can remain intact so acoustic music is great. I can’t see the point of amplifying a live gig in a church crypt. The trumpet was designed to be loud for a distance – surely it doesn’t need its own mike for the hearing-impaired sound guy to mix. (My theory is that anyone exposed to so much noise must have industrial deafness, which is why they make the music so loud)
