I hate that this shit happens. And I honestly don't remember it being like this when I was in my teens/twenties either. Maybe it was the environment I was in. Who knows.
I strongly believe in people calling others out on their behaviour, but that's easier said than done. I'm reasonably intelligent and empathetic - I'm sure we all are here - and spot these things happening. But I'm also a very large male who used to remove drunks from bars for a living. I have the privilege of being equipped to intervene; not everyone can. What do you do when intervention/calling out is far too risky?
And I do think it's been creeping up on us for a long time, this war on empathy. I firmly believe there's a connection to reality TV, and to the un-empathetic behaviour of so many of our so-called leaders.
I just hope we're hearing about it more - Roastbusters, RoK, these tools at Laneway - because a societal rejection of it is building.

Cheers to you, Russell. Public Address has always been an island of refuge amongst the stress of life, and you and this community have always brought some measured, sane thought to balance my despair and frustration at many of the things that go on in this country.
I’m eagerly awaiting your Metro feature on K Rd too; this street has featured in my life for 20 years, but the last two years it’s been the place I work from every day and it has been truly fascinating.
Ever the optimist, I like to see the resurgent bFM, and the rise of The Spinoff, The Wireless, TransportBlog and others, as a natural reaction to the stifling of challenging voices by many of the big media powers and our politicians. The pressure’s been building for several years – sometime this year, I reckon something popped.

Today was my first time on my bike since [mumblemumblemumble], and even though I was heading to K Rd, I took the Lightpath route to try it out. I have never felt so at ease on my bike in Auckland, ever.

My Friday five cents...I love "All I Gotta Do". I reckon it was Darcy Clay's best. All kinds of depth and emotional complexity bubbling away under the surface of deceptively simple stonking rock song. One of my all time favourites.

Good summation of how I feel too Russell. Part of me even suspects that the one koru-based design chosen was intentionally the most stark, to reduce its chances.
Mr Slack pointed out another of the oddities of this whole mess yesterday on Twitter: this government invests millions in NZTE's 'Better by Design' programme to show businesses why design expertise matters; yet when it comes to our flag they left design expertise completely out of the conversation.

It might be idealistic, but to me a new flag is something that comes as the culmination of a nation's movement towards independence - the peak of some kind of wave of proud change. Instead, it's happening as a distraction from the undermining of our independence and it's being treated like a corporate rebrand.

"Engineer" makes it sound like I knew what I was doing Russell.
More importantly, I think your optimism about the station is fair. Hugh's proved he can take an old medium in a surprising new direction. I'm looking forward to seeing where he, and the rest of the crew of that wonky old ship, can take it from here.
