  • Up Front: Dropping the A-Bomb, in reply to BenWilson,

Practically we draw the line well before birth. The reasons seem sound, as the organism becomes steadily more and more like humans we clearly do value, babies. We have to pick a line. I don't even know what it is in Australia. Some magic number. We'd have to pick one for here, too.

..I've started thinking of termination options as a spectrum, rather than an ok/not-ok line, which also aligns kind of well-ish with the affects of a procedure on the woman in question:
    * contraception: encouraged
    * morning-after pill: fine, slightly unpleasant experience
    * RU486: fine, unpleasant experience, needs some support
    * abortion: progressively narrower window depending on how far along the pregnancy is. Early = ok, lots of support; late-term = only if the woman's health is seriously compromised by continuing the pregnancy
    * infanticide: only if the infant is very clearly satan (horns, pointy tail, red glowing eyes)

I do love the shot of Guy Williams waving frantically & shouting "Thanks, Lorde!".

  • Capture: Laneway 2014 + Lorde, in reply to JacksonP,

Yeah, the logistics at Laneway were generally great, still way better than BDO, & I noticed that the main stages were pretty easy to negotiate, even reasonably close to the front.

I wasn't being particularly pushed or jostled, but there was just something a bit... squawky/boofheady about the crowd. Much lower proportion of hipsters and rockabilly types, more of the kind of people I associate with a friday night in the viaduct. I kind of expect that crowd at BDO (plus teenage goths/metalheads), but I think the more annoying ones are (mostly) confined to the bar areas, which I don't frequent any more, because of the queues.

Oh, and my sources at the gig reported precisely two "fucks."

Yup, and she apologised in advance for the first one.

  • Capture: Laneway 2014 + Lorde, in reply to bob daktari,

Agree with everything you've written, except I didn't bother with drinking coupons, & I wouldn't go so far as "worst festival experience"* - just wasn't feeling it though. I was really weirded out that there was such a stark difference in the nature of the crowd to previous years. I think that the notable boorishness is partly a product of the size of the crowd as well, though. I think it would've been less annoying with maybe 600-1000 fewer people there. I ended up leaving early because I felt like there was nowhere to escape to.

I would've spent most of my time at the Cactus Cat stage, except the crowd was beyond capacity, and the two acts I did catch, I had to put up with people shouting across me at each other through the whole performance.

Lorde show was just lovely though, even though the crowd was the same size in a smaller area (go figure). Nice to see entire families out, that in itself changed the tone for me.

    * ETA: curiously enough, that title goes to the first Laneway, held in the (former) Britomart carpark. An absolute debacle. The next three were fantastic.

  • Hard News: Big Friday Music: Counting…, in reply to Chris Waugh,

The schedule alternates between stages throughout the day. While one act is playing, the next act sets up on the other stage, so there's no gap between bands.

  • Hard News: Making it up on smacking,

Graeme: interested to know what you think the law should look like. How would you decriminalise light smacking, but also reduce/prevent cases where a parent is acquitted for behaviour they're likely to have gotten a conviction for, had the recipient not been their child?

And/or: what do you think of the outcomes of the cases publicised by anti-smacking lobbyists, before the law change? eg the one with the riding crop?
