  • Field Theory: The Home Straight,

Usain Bolt accused of showboating - would you care if you were him?

Isinbayeva making it on her last attempt. Talk about seizing the moment. A champion.

Netherlands winning the water polo gold in a nailbiting finish against the US made an unwatchable sport watchable.

Argentina smashing Brazil in mens' football semifinal.

    Weightlifter Steiner's jumping jubilation.

The US men's and women's 100m relay teams dropping their batons!

    So much good stuff.

  • Field Theory: Disco Tom,

Performance enhancers. That's funny. Like saying EPO in athletics is like MSG in a Chinese kitchen and I guess it is. I wonder if these games are cleaner than usual. It would be good if they were.

    Tom Ashley, you're a legend.

    Xin xilan, jia you!

  • Field Theory: Playing Catch Up,

You know, before these Games I would have said get rid of board sailing - it's about as exciting as watching someone sandpaper a house. But funnily enough, today, I've changed my tune.

Tom Ashley, you rock! Eleven races to win the gold - that's some achievement.

But tennis has to go. And although synchronised swimming has its proponents, it is still just plain WEIRD.

Now as for rhythmic gymnastics. Bring it on!

I noticed that about the women's team gymnastics highlight package as well. Deja vu!

Amusing story in today's Herald about the Russian women's beach volleyball coach being upset over being beaten by Georgians who are Brazillian by birth.

Maybe the Large Hadron Collider will suck up delusional types that think Iraq hasnt turned out all that bad.

  • Hard News: The newest neocon catastrophe,

Iraq hasn't turned out all that bad ...... that's positively Kafkaesque. Black is the new white. A hundred thousand civilians killed and millions made refugees. Gosh if that's not all that bad, i'd hate to live in your parallel universe, Andrew.

  • Hard News: The newest neocon catastrophe,

The depressing thing about TVNZ's 6pm news bulletin last night was the trumpeted 'exclusive interview' with the New Zealander who is the US volleyball team coach who's father was murdered in Beijing. That was trailed as their top story. War? What war?

Just listen to Sunday's Mediawatch - it speaks volumes about the state of news and current affairs in New Zealand.

The Halliburton story that ran on the Sunday programme recently was edited to about a third of its original BBC Panorama programme length!

  • Hard News: The newest neocon catastrophe,

Saakashvili is a brilliant and compelling speaker. He is articulate, fluent in English, persuasive and pro-Western. He reminds me a little of Jason Schwartzman in the Wes Anderson films Rushmore and the Darjeeling Ltd.

I have had some sympathy for Georgia because they view the separatist regions of Abkhazia and South Ossetia as a domestic issue. However there is considerable evidence that Israel and the Americans have been rearming the Georgian military which is something that Russia is evidently very angry about.

Russia is also very concerned about NATO encroachment on its Western border from Poland, Hungary, Romania, Turkey right through to Georgia into what it thinks is its sphere of influence. A kind of strategic encirclement, if you like.

But Russia's response in Georgia has been terrifying and I can't felt thinking back to what the Russian military did in Chechenya. Ruthless is the word that comes to mind.
