  • Hadyn Green,

All sports fans should have HD MySky

I'll have to start a whip-round for my new TV first.

Who knew that Dan Carter suffered from shaving rash? Dude needs product.

Maybe he just read the expose on Prettyprettypretty about men's skin care. </plug>

  • Andrew G,

"I like the debate that comes around every Olympics, where someone declares that certain Olympic events aren't real sports and should be removed from the Games."

Last night tv1 was showing the post gymnastic comp gala night which is kind of like a fancy circus. There was all sorts of dancing etc. At one point there was a large chinese dance group performing; I yelled through to my partner that the teams interpretive dance gold medal dance off was in progress. She came through with a discusted look on her face, "I can't believe what they allow into the olympics, and these guys aren't even that good".

  • Charles Mabbett,

You know, before these Games I would have said get rid of board sailing - it's about as exciting as watching someone sandpaper a house. But funnily enough, today, I've changed my tune.

Tom Ashley, you rock! Eleven races to win the gold - that's some achievement.

But tennis has to go. And although synchronised swimming has its proponents, it is still just plain WEIRD.

Now as for rhythmic gymnastics. Bring it on!

I thought that was the definition of Olympic sports, sports that are either too weird or boring for us to care about more than once every four years.
It's the sports that are very big on their own that need to go. eg football and tennis

  • Angus Robertson,

Indycar open wheel oval racing has just been bumped from ESPN to Versus cable. This move to third teir media palces indycar on a par with other minority sports (ice hockey, athletics, cycling) and must surely qualify as an Olympic Event.

Scott Dixon for gold in 2012?

  • LegBreak,

The main criteria for what constitutes an Olympic sport should be whether it is the pinnacle of that particular sport. In most cases that is the case, although the 2 obvious casualties from such a ruling would be football and tennis.

And the problem there is that they (particularly football) are such a money spinner.

I also don’t like sports where judging of aesthetics is a crucial part. That affects diving, gymnastics, synch swimming, some boxing and probably a few others I can’t think of right now. Although I’d admit that is less of an issue since the end of the last Cold War.

As I’ve said previously, swimming needs to be stripped right back, largely because of the imbalance it puts on the medal table. Cycling is close to falling into that category too/

And motor racing totally goes against the Olympian concept; even if it did involve identical cars.

And on a separate note; how many people were just so thrilled to see a bit of awkward banter between Peter Williams, Jim Hickey and whoever else was around instead of NZ win a yachting gold live last night?

At first I was going to ask that you discreetly delete my comment on that thread in the interests of protecting my manly inage (such as it is).

But instead, I went and added a more inane comment. But hey, at least this time I didn't mention epoxy resin.

    Not many, apparently.

  • Kyle Matthews,

The strength of the synch-swimmers is amazing, and I am totally against anyone who thinks it's should be removed from the games.

I don't so much care as to whether it fits into the games. I just think it's a stupid sport.

My girlfriend and I were watching the top pairs or duets last night for a while. They practice in the water for 10 hours a day for years to look weird. Gymnastics at least looks good. Sync swimming, from the silly goosestep marching to the pool onwards, looks like robots in water. I keep expecting them to short circuit.

  • Hamboy,

I'm sorry but I'm not good with names, but the commentators are most of the fun. Like the useless one that did the rowing and yachting, who kept getting the placings wrong, when it was clear as day on the tv who was leading and where they finished.
I discovered I was quite good an guessing the distance of the throws in the shot put final, where the commentator was just trying to get wrong.

This is so true - like the other night we heard one of the commentators say, excitedly "THIS IS LIKE A RACE BETWEEN A ZEBRA AND A GIRAFFE!!!!!" which of course it wasn't at all, but it provided us with hours of entertainment.... all night my husband Paul kept shouting things like "THIS IS LIKE A MUD FIGHT BETWEEN A MARSUPIAL AND A RODENT!!!!" or "THIS IS LIKE A BAKE-OFF BETWEEN A KEA AND A KAKAPO!!!!" which made the Olympics a bit more lively than they usually are.
