  • Hard News: Denial,

...but the other 5 winning coaches had not previously failed; that is a totally spurious argument.

Not an argument - just an observation. It *is* possible to lose one world cup with one coach, and yet still win it with the same.

As is the argument that changing coaches every 4 years hasn’t worked before, so why not do something different??

I admit, I was stooping to the level of 'sports talkback caller' with that one, such is my brain-space after an afternoon of Deaks and co. My main argument is that Henry *does* now have some RWC experience to call upon, and won't make the same mistakes twice. That, apparently, doesn't count for a lot.

Anyway, my favourite conversation of Sunday afternoon...

Caller: "Deaks, I've got two predictions to make. The first is that a Deans-led Aussie team will beat a Henry-led All Blacks team in the 2011 World Cup Final. The second, that final will be played in Sydney after we stuff up the Stadium at Eden Park."

Deaker [no irony]: "Well, Henry won't be in charge of the All Blacks by 2011, and Eden Park will be ready, but, other than that, I think you're dead right."

  • Hard News: Denial,

In a way the decision to stick with Henry shows a certain maturity about the NZRFU board.

Exactly! But one of the ongoing themes from Deaker's callers was 'how are we ever going to win the cup if we don't get rid of a loser like Henry!'

Did getting rid of all our previous 'losers' improve things?

And any suggestions of 'experience' or 'learning from mistakes' was summarily shot down. Of course, no-one saw fit to mention the coach of the 2003 RWC squad had been a loser in the 1999 tournament. Experience? Pah!

Deans has had a chance in the All Black fold with Mitchell.

And he's still young. He'll get another chance, probably after the next World Cup.

But ... gah! Sports talkback. I should really avoid it. It's like the radio equivalent of kiwiblog...

  • Hard News: Denial,

And on a more trivial matter: has there ever been a more overwhelming surge of Canterbury parochialism than that over the All Black coaching announcement? ... The parochial peak was struck on Morning Report today when both Fergie McCormick and Alex Wyllie appeared to say they would support a Wallabies side coached by Deans over an All Black team. Good grief.

It's not just Cantabs. Deaker's afternoon talkback yesterday had a non-stop call-a-thon of people I can only really describe as 'idiots', calling in to decry the 'celebration of mediocrity' the NZRFU is buying into, with many offering their support to the Wallabies until Robbie was given his 'rightful' position.

    Absolutely nuts.

  • Hard News: The Clamour to Cringe,

Derail: New Wikipedia scandal -Prepare for soul searching news stories about it and Web 2.0.

Man, what has the Register got against Wikipedia exactly? Do they have a 'one-anti-Wikipedia-article-a-month' policy or something?

To quote the Register in this instance...

...a rogue editor revealed that the site's top administrators are using a secret insider mailing list to crackdown on perceived threats to their power.

Or, to put in less 'shock-horror' terms, a few of the senior editors have a 'private' mailing list where they discuss issues to do with the site. Surely this is stunningly non-controversial.

  • Speaker: Moving Right Along,

I haven't come across any major emotional headcases out there

Tune into radio sport talkback for all your crazed sports fan needs. It really is the gateway into another world. A demented, illogical world where Troy Flavell would have single-handedly won the cup, and Richie McCaw is an over-rated showpony.

  • Speaker: Moving Right Along,

if SA had it in 08, OZ in 09 and NZ in 10 then the poor South African fans would literally go 3-4 years without seeing the ABs or Wallabies in the flesh and the same would be repeated for fans in the other countries. That sure as hell ain't gonna happen.

Hence the shared hosting idea (NZ & OZ one year, SA and Argentina the next). That way it's only every second year you miss out.

Members of the community are cordially invited to now come up with examples of words whose "wrong" meaning has become generally accepted through sheer currency in the language.

"jealous", when they really mean "envious".
