Re. troll. 'Oh crap, I didn't see the sign.' (Sorry, I don't know how to make this look like a quote.)

We should stop encouraging him. I always liked that quote about the oxygen of publicity, Margaret Thatcher was it?

Do you know who Jesus was talking to when he said, "Do not judge"?

Do you know who He was talking to when He said, "Judge rightly"?

    No. What's the point?

And adulterers who lie about it, double bad! Might even include stealing - 'someone else's spouse'. The punishment doesn't bear thinking about, although perhaps donation of bodily organs might come into it. (Refer to China and certain middle east states.) And that nicely wraps up this thread...

  • Hard News: Medical Matters,

Thank you Jackie for pointing out the obvious. I'm a woman. Having (or not) a baby was always, ultimately, going to be my choice. Reading these convoluted 'personhood' arguments makes me feel like the last thirty years never happened. Are you guys that young? Do you have no idea of recent social history? I think a High Court review is exactly what we need; quite clearly the majority of New Zealanders are comfortable with the current system of abortion on demand, for all intents and purposes. Maybe it's time to end the fiction (and paternalism) of a woman needing two experts to certify she will be in dire mental straits if she has a baby. It's not fair to women in out of the way places (such as Westland), it's not fair to women who are poor, and it's demeaning to pretend to an exaggerated level of distress in order to 'qualify' for the procedure. If we in New Zealand, (the majority anyway), can live with homosexual law reform, legalised prostitution, civil unions, the legal and social condemnation of family violence, and so on, surely we can live with abortion as a legal form of contraception? It won't be compulsory. It won't even be necessary for most women. If you don't like abortions, don't have one. End of story.

  • Hard News: Medical Matters,

Why are so many men (on this post) so hung up on the physiological/philosophical minutiae of abortion? I feel inclined to give you a good slap and advise you to get over yourselves. The children we do have, all the children here in the world already, are the ones that matter, not the might have beens/products of conception/'unborn babies' that some of you seem so wracked with existential guilt over. Sure abortion should be a thoughtful decision, and in some circumstances a terribly difficult one, but I refuse to have someone else's religious/sexual world views imposed on me.

  • OnPoint: Sneaky brackets,

Is it possible for you to re-do your graph so the Australian state taxes are included with the federal taxes? I know they vary from state to state but some sort of 'average' number? I'm always hearing how taxes are lower in Aus but I've never seen an accurate comparison.

  • Island Life: A simple 'your lordship'…,

But what do you call people when you don't know their name? e.g. running after someone who's left their wallet behind. Calling them 'Excuse me' in a loud voice seems so silly. When I was a kid the fish and chip shop lady called everyone 'Dearie' - it worked for her.
