  • Hard News: Again: Is everyone okay?, in reply to Lilith __,

Lilith - several people I know, myself included, hit that point yesterday. Thank goodness for sunshine today.

I hope you can enjoy and recuperate during your get-away :)

  • Up Front: Giving Me Grief,

Thanks Jack & Jackie. Support is stretched thin in Chch at the moment (and thinner in my family who are distributed around the island at this point), but we'll get through it.

  • Hard News: Again: Is everyone okay?, in reply to webweaver,

I’ve been wondering whether it would be better to run out from under them or run towards the building in the belief that they would come down at an angle

Run away. If the building doesn’t actually come down the most dangerous place to be is right next to it (falling bits) and if you do get caught you want to be as close to the outer edge of the rubble where the rescue teams will be working from as you can be.

As a Chch resident I’m relatively unaffected by the quake so far – house secure in the mostly untouched sector of the city (the rest of the locals may hate me now :) ), don’t personally know anyone dead or missing (but of course know people who do).

But my family is currently dealing with another tragedy, the second this month, so that leaves me in much the same place emotionally as those who have lost people to the quake.

Thank you everyone for your thoughts and donations and prayers for Christchurch.

Christchurch -wasn't- particularly seismically active when they put it in.

  • Up Front: Giving Me Grief,

Just to add to what was already a bad month for my family (see previous comment), I've just learnt that my Uncle was killed in a car accident Tuesday night. This was unrelated to the quake (up Blenheim way)

My aunt survived, no major injuries apparently, but was trapped until the car was found about 3pm yesterday.

This is all getting a bit much.

Most facilities are working at my place in Upper Riccarton/Sockburn, if people want to use them and can get here (I am currently without car).

I am rationing things like showers because of not wanting to put water into the waste system, but am prepared to make exceptions for people in need :)

God, rescue teams withdrawn from the CTV building apparently.

Just reassigning rescue personnel to other sites temporarily while they use heavy machinery to clear away the next section of rubble according to the national fire commander on TV1.

Having decided I'm not going to get back to sleep I just took a walk around the block. Whereas when I stepped outside about 3am it was uncannily quiet, Xmas/NY morning quiet, now it's back to what I'd expect in background traffic, slightly more in the way of sirens.

The aftershocks still seem very regular, some sort of rumble or shake every 10 minutes or so.

Trying not to feel "survivor guilt", but planning a cycle tour of flats I know spread over a few suburbs tomorrow (today) to physically touch base with people. If noting else planning the route gives my mind something to occupy itself.

I have a friend who works on a 7th floor in city that I'm worried about. Just heard from another friend who works in the danger zone - OK, but others nearby injured.
