nd so we reach impasse where all we’re going to do now is pass snide comments
Possibly.
I am very interested in your comments visavis expert witnesses. Are you actually telling me that specialist knowledge (whether in regard to identifying boats or whitebait) is irrelevant? Compromised by people being expert? Just not up to some statistical survey?

In te reo, there isnt a distinction between she/he/his/hers/her/him - gender is given by names(but not always) or specific gender words - in the South, hakui (for mother) or hakoro (for father - but both words can also mean senior close relatives.) Tama generally means a male young person, but tamaiti is just a kid, and tamariki = children. Hine almost always denotes a female (I know a couple of really odd exceptions, which maybe peculiarly Southern.)
Language is so much joy!

NZETC /me.books is an excellent site…their work makes the much hoo-haa’d (byCLL & NZSA anyway) “Great NZ Books” site look puerile. Most established writers have shunned GNZB – so, CLL & NZSA’s latest ploy is to try and use an irrelevant law to digitise NZ works *without* authors’ permission, as a purported ‘service’ to the Foundation For The Blind.
I have flatly & firmly denied them this (and I am visually-disabled.)

Indeed...I think the underlying assumption is a truth= words have power, cutting & killing power, as well as nourishing & healing power (not to mention plain old explanatory & enlightening & generally what-makes-us-human power (ever since we discovered that interesting ability to make spoken words last for a very long time)
May that ability continue/long last-

I’ve always liked to think that freedom of speech and a free press were a given here in NZ.
Dear Lilith (if I may) that has *never* been the case since Europeans arrived.
Mind you, it wasnt happy comments/free for all at *any* time here. (Two nasty wee killing-feuds were started here in the South because of words...)

HORansome would be pushed to declare that the murder was legal if the courts allowed it, which tells us that whatever it is he is discussing, it isn’t anything we care about as far as wrongful convictions go
Now, *that* is a very interesting & informed take on matters...

So wonderfully linear, sea & land & colours & sky - and that thin crust of human presence...
