And the more I think about it, the more relevant it seems to me. It’s astonishing that no one at any point gathered all the hosts together and talked about boundaries.

True, but FFS isn't there a point where you just shouldn't need a memo not to be a wretched arsehole? Back in the day, I think we settled boundaries for my slot on Public Address Radio over coffee and cake: "No defamation suits, no contempt of court and remember to keep the language time-slot appropriate and BSA code-compliant." I was really thankful for the level of trust you showed me (and the awesome folks who'd apply course corrections when needed), and hope I always lived up to it.

I’m impressed by Rudman’s ability to dog whistle, feed the “real” trolls and stick his head in the sand at the same time. Quite the circus act.

Well, yes... and am I the only person who noticed the irony of Rudman's pompous little lecture about "civil discourse" and the evils of anonymity in a newspaper that allows... well, anonymous comments. I personally also think being lectured on civility by anyone connected with the Herald's disgusting Whaleoil-driven campaign to drive Len Brown out of office (and slut-shame Bevan Cheung) is like getting lessons on good taste from Miley Cyrus.

It’s also home to Graeme Hill and Wallace Chapman, who do great work. I think it’s worth persisting with, but the last thing they need is more of the same on weekdays.

Consent is not complicated. It’s really fucking simple. If you find it too confusing, you should err on the side of Always Asking, every time. And we should stop pretending that talking about sex isn’t done because it’s dull. It isn’t done because it’s terrifying.

And you know what, kids, consent (i.e. treating your potential sexual partner as a participant in a mutually respectful and pleasurable activity not some semen spittoon) is really fucking hot.

It could very well turn out that way, though I suspect at the moment management are thinking “probably this will blow over in a couple of months so we’ll stand them down until the new year and then reassess”.

Almost definitely, but I just hope Radio Live management are going to be taking the time to have a think about their rather long form of similarly gross on-air misogyny and having a good hard think about whether that's what they want to be. It's not as if the marketplace is exactly under-supplied with casually misogynistic, racist and homophobic shock jocks so why not be a genuine point of difference? Would it really be that hard to find media savvy, accessible Maori broadcasters who aren't total douche nozzles?

  • Hard News: Narcissists and bullies, in reply to Morgan Nichol,

Having him talk to people who can elucidate the problem we see with the police seems far preferably to not having him talk to those people, and instead just hoping it filters up from some junior in a weekly report.

Sure – but here’s something I learned the hard way when I was getting sober. “Making amends to those you’ve harmed” is important but – and it’s a damn big caveat – you must never do so in a way that just doubles down on the damage you’ve caused.

And, yes, I think effectively cold calling people who have deep-set trust issues with the organization you’re the public face of, shows a lack of judgement and sensitivity however well-intentioned. He may also wish to keep in a mind a lot of critics of the Police's handling of this are themselves survivors of sexual assault/abuse, and guess what? It's not exactly rocket science why they might not exactly welcome unsolicited phone calls from strangers.
