For ten minutes last night, I thought I was being a little unfair in calling for Peter Marshall to be sacked. Now? Fuck it.
Police Commissioner Peter Marshall has denied the reputation of the entire police force is on the line over revelations a young girl had laid a formal complaint over the behaviour of the Roast Busters group, despite police earlier saying they had been hamstrung because there had been no complaints.
Let’s review – It was a flat out lie that there “no complaints”. What actually happened is that at least one victim of the Roast Busters went to the Police, and was slut-shamed into going away. And like some infomercial in hell, wait! There’s more!
If Marshall thinks that hasn’t harmed the reputation of the whole Police force, he’s not only incompetent (or flat out corrupt and a pathological liar) he’s ... detached from reality.

And in you not could make this shit up news, the police have threatened Martyn Bradbury with six months’ imprisonment if he did not take down an image parodying police inaction.
Oh FFS, I think PASers know my opinion of Bradbury but this is ridiculous. Even if I thought this was one of those times Bomber had gone screamingly OTT, more often than not the best response is just to ignore him until the rush of over-oxygenated blood to his head recedes.
How the fuck is ANY girl or woman who has been raped supposed to have ANY faith in the police to do their goddamn job now? It’s not as if getting rape victims to make a complaint is a walk in the park in the first place. The damage from this entire debacle is incalculable.
Let’s walk this out a little further – why should ANYONE subjected to domestic violence? (You know, you might be dressed immodestly or have booze in the house.) Why should the GLBT community, or sex workers or Maori/Pasifika who, whether you like it or not, do have *cough* historical trust issues with the Police?
What really fucks me off about people like Greg O’Connor is they think the respect the Police enjoy is given as of right, as opposed to being earned ever damn day. And, I shouldn’t need to say, richly deserved by plenty of frontline officers who should be as angry as everyone else with a micron of human decency, if not more so.
Matthew:
I’m not going to repeat that rather distasteful turn of phrase Russell has deleted, but let me assure you that the only thing that is tumescent today is my utter, seething contempt for rapists, and the enablers and apologists who make it so damn easy.
Do me the fraking courtesy of assuming my anger and contempt at the people who’ve reminded me why I didn’t report my own rape – and going to the Police was NEVER an option – is very far from a “trendy pile-on”. I’m not the only rape survivor here you've been incredibly patronizing and dismissive towards, so just cut it out.

Because it pretty much seems like there is a line in the sand somewhere, but no one is willing to disclose it, because it would make them a terrible person, and once you are articulating it, it is impossible to defend.
Oh, but “the line” has to be everywhere and nowhere at the same time, because The Victim-Blaming Playbook boils down to one very simple principle: The only way a rapist’s prey ever stops “asking for it” is not to exist at all.

Which is the polite way of saying that he was either lying or has been lied to.
Politeness be damned, how can Ann Tolley - or anyone else - continue to have any confidence in Peter Marshall? At best, he's utterly incompetent. At worse... well, prudence stills my tongue.

Latest revelations make me eat my words – a 13 year old victim made a complaint and then got talked out of pressing charges by police.
You know what, it may be consitutionally improper but I'd be totally OK with the Police Minister *cough* clearly signalling to the Police Commissioner that she would happily accept his resignation, and those of everyone involved in this foul abdication of responsibility.
I think it's time the NZ Police Force, from nose to tail, decide who they serve -- and "rapists" is the wrong, career-ending answer.

Speaker: Gender quotas (and helping…, in reply to
But if you think that somehow quotas mean that incompetent women will be promoted ahead of competent men, then you will need to say, to my face,(or on-line will do), that I’m incompetent.
Frankly, I think you can look at any government - central or local, foreign or domestic - and find someone whose presence is not susceptible to rational explanation. (Hell, I'm mesmerized by Toronto's lying, incompetent crackhead Mayor that it seems nobody wants, but nobody can get rid off.) But I don't see how the New Zealand Labour Party's new arrangements makes that any more or less likely.

Speaker: Gender quotas (and helping…, in reply to
I like a lot of voters, I as guessing, don’t see any problem with what labour is doing, quite the opposite in fact, equality benefits us all
And even if you don't like it, tough titty. Labour (like every other party) gets to select its candidates however it sees fit. "Man ban", List Lotto, Hunger Games whatever. Any voter who finds their methodology or its results particularly objectionable can register that disdain in the only poll that really counts -- casting a ballot in a free, fair and credible general election.

Do teenagers understand these technicalities?
Stephen: Please don't take this the wrong way, but that's rape culture in a single word. And, frankly, as a middle-aged man who not that long ago was a teenager with a semi-permanent erection, I find it repugnant to be told in any way, shape, or form rape is just something teenage men just do. Because it's not.

Well, when actually does group sex become rape?
At the risk of sounding offensively glib, group sex becomes rape the same way every other type of sex becomes rape. What's really squicked me out is that we're into the second decade of the 21st century, and there's still a non-trivial number of people who think sexual intercourse is the one thing a person can meaningfully consent to while unconscious.

I feel for the Police. I suspect the poor buggers have been fighting the legal machine internally for years, and then made sure this went public out of frustration. I have been there myself, waiting months for some spotty Vic grad to write an opinion.
You know, Slarty, I really hope you’re being a wee bit snarky there because it would be nice if “those poor buggers” elected a union president who’d speak out as least as vigorously as he assassinates the character of anyone who dares suggest an armed police force might just create more problems than it solves.
“Many callers with first-hand experience phoned to talk about their experiences and we were really amazed by their honesty and ease when talking about a very sensitive subject.’’
Yeah, I was really ‘amazed’ the young woman in the audio Russell linked to didn’t tell Jackson and Tamihere to take their victim-blaming, rape apologist checklist and go fuck themselves with it. Sorry, Mediaworks, 'Willie and JT' ran through the rape culture playbook and as long as you keep being corporate enablers you are the problem not the solution.
