Maybe not, but there was a Conrad Black

I have it on good authority...his..that he's innocent.

  • Hard News: Changes and appointments,

Could be a Daily Telegraph style approach, where they up the level of photos of pretty woman on every page.

Let's not forget the DT was the paper which not only announced the discovery of WMDs in Iraq after the invasion, but did it twice (and I'm too busy/shattered to find a link).

And not a Murdoch in sight.

  • Hard News: Changes and appointments,

    I don't mean literally.

    Yep, I understood that.

But it may not mean much.

  • Hard News: Changes and appointments,

They're going to kill Radio New Zealand.

God I hope not..it was the only glimmer of radio hope when I was back in NZ last month. Aside from a show here and there, the rest was either dire or such low power that you could only get it on a small strip of Ponsonsby Rd.

    What happened?

  • Hard News: My Mum and other good things,

Where did all the Simons come from, I ask you?

My parents tell me it was the honeymoon at the THC Waitangi, via National Women's

But yes, growing up I was the only one I knew, and now I'm surrounded by god knows how many like named contemporaries. Where were they hiding at school?

  • Hard News: My Mum and other good things,

a local crew in the Playground in 1887-88

I'm guessing you mean a century later? Maybe Soul On Ice? (white kids) Or Ardijah? (brown kids) Or D-Faction?(mixed)

Then I was lucky enough (wanker alert) to see Beats International live in Tokyo in 1991, playing at the Bunkamura in Shibuya. That was bloody fantastic.

Or you could've caught them at The Box in the same year....and yes, well cool. I (wanker alert) spent two days hanging with Norman doing an extended interview for, I think, RIU. He was well cool and just wanted to talk reggae.

Then, after the gig, he was asked to go for a ride in a nice new Ford by some guys he'd met. Thinking they were going for a spin for a spliff, he hopped in and the car headed off down the motorway. He asked them how long they'd had the car and was told '15 minutes'.

He asked to get out and found himself alone in Otara Town Centre....

  • Hard News: My Mum and other good things,

Are there *any* hotels in NZ with free wifi?

I had it as part of a deal last year at the Metropolis in Ak.

But mostly, in my experience, no and they seem to be bemused when asked. Which always comes as a shock after the hotels of Asia where overwhelmingly now it's a gratis service (Singapore excepted, there I've found it's often charged unless you ask before check in and mostly then they relent on the charges).

  • Hard News: My Mum and other good things,

This is inspiring and makes me teary-eyed …

Hell, you should try viewing it as a long offshore (and I hate the phrase but what the hell..) Kiwi. Misty eyed doesn't come close.

And I loved the story about your mum, Russell. Time and distance really makes me treasure my parents more and more as the years go on.

I've always loved the Beats International tune

I've always been a sucker for the rocksteadyied out dub mix on the flip of the 12"
