  • Capture: Two Tone, in reply to Hebe,

Have you tried the Nikon Capture software?

No, I haven't, but if, as you say, it only works for Nikon cameras, it really doesn't seem worth it. I assume at some stage I'll need a new camera and although I'm happy with Nikon, I can't guarantee that the next camera will be a Nikon (brand loyalty has its value, but not when taken to an extreme), and in the here and now have photos from HTC and Samsung phones to deal with.

Irfan View I'm still unsure about, but I seem to be having a certain measure of success with GIMP for the time being. I'm curious to see what happens when (if?) my lightzone approval comes through.

Still waiting lightzone approval, but in the meantime that NEF to JPG programme I'm pretty sure I linked to above seems to be doing the trick. Unlike Picasa and UFRaw, the change in file size after conversion to jpg is not in any way dramatic, for one thing.

This is proving to be quite an educational thread. Thanks for all the tips, everyone.

Love that second one - the gardens as portal to an alien world.

  • Capture: Two Tone, in reply to David Hood,

Thanks, David, I'll have a look into lightzone.

The trouble I'm having with GIMP is that I have to convert .NEF to .jpg before I import to GIMP. That UFRaw thing is doing weird stuff to my photos, like making them much darker and curving the edges and giving me file sizes anywhere from a few hundred KB to twice the size of the original, and that Nikon thingy I downloaded and installed and now it's MIA.

  • Capture: Two Tone,

And a GIMP plugin for raw. Ugly page, though.

ETA: having installed it - plugin? Really? Or stand alone software? Dunno. Will experiment.

  • Capture: Two Tone,

So here's a problem I have with raw: my camera saves raw images in a .NEF format. Of the programmes I have, only Picasa can open them. I can use Picasa to save them as .jpg, but I've been wondering if in the process I lose any of that raw detail. Well, I just compared a photo in the original raw .NEF format and it's .jpg conversion. The .NEF file is 10.3MB and looks just a little bit richer than the 3.9MB .jpg conversion. JPEG is the only option under 'Save as' in Picasa. I can't find any way to persuade GIMP or Irfan View to accept .NEF files. I'm going to do a bit of googling (as much as 2-year old demands to go to a park allow), but does anybody have any suggestions as to how I can keep that raw richness?

ETA: Also browsed through the camera settings, and .NEF is my only raw option that I can see.

ETA#2: Well, look what I found. I hope it works...

EA#3: This too, but it looks a lot less official, so I dunno...

I hadn't heard of Clara van Wel before, but that article seems positive. Anybody know what her music's like?

But, I thought you were soaking in it, over there, in Beijing...

The taste and smell of it I'm quite used to - and the taste of it's riverine version from the fish I ate in Changsha (google heavy metal Xiang River, it's quite scary), it's the sound of it I'm unsure of.

And more Kiwis hitting the international big time.

I'm not quite sure I like the sound of "atmospheric death metal" - although my tastes do tend towards the heavy, but I did quite like this quote:

"We're not about making money, that's why we have jobs. We really love playing this music and it excites me like nothing else."

These artists ain't starving to maintain their authenticity.

(oops, left a couple of words out of the first sentence. Fixed)

Our spring turning into your autumn.

I like how the weather is cooling off and the autumn winds are clearing the air out somewhat. I'm trying to save some autumn photos for the next autumn thread too, so that I can be both 6th months out of date and all opposite at the same time.
