Oh boy. Think I'll dial my chair back and settle in here for the afternoon's show.

  • Hard News: Self-satisfactorily Yours,

And in other news Kanye West has announced he is spending the rest of his life standing in front of a mirror as he is just so fucking awesome.

I remember hearing Kanye West being intereviewed recently about 808s and Heartbreak on the radio. I came in a little late to the programme, and didn't hear who it was - and was astonished by how unexciting the music sounded, and the plainly enormous distended ego of its maker.

Was shocked to finally realise it was Kanye West, both because I had no idea he was so enormously in love with himself and because I've generally loved the music he's put out to date. The 808s stuff - just can't get into it somehow. Maybe it's just that T-Pain has ruined vocoder vocals for everybody.

Another tack: I somehow missed out on Melody Rules , but do remember Ice TV ripping the hell out of it.

  • Hard News: Mac Ouch,

I'm more miffed about the rising relative price of Amazon's dead-tree books, rather than the Apple digital variety (let alone Kindle...)

Should have taken the chance and placed my orders a year ago!

Regular posters to the 'your views' section typically haven't ever had to design and build a prison. It's not just a house with locks on the outside.

You know, I'd heard grumbling about underfloor heating in prisons before, and had somehow sneakily wondered whether it was an unneeded luxury. I honestly had never thought of a security or cost angle. Thanks to both of you for pointing it out!

Semi-related note: are Your Views commenters the new Kiwiblog Right? We need to think up a catchy name or something...

  • Hard News: Mac Ouch,

On his blog at Wired.com, Bruce Sterling has published the verbatim notes of his somewhat controversial speech at Webstock under the heading What Bruce Sterling Actually Said About Web 2.0 at Webstock 09.

I missed the controversy, but bloody hell, what an astonishing read that was. Thanks for the link.

  • Hard News: The Casino,

Orwell would love this thread. All the snobby pigs looking down their noses at the dumb sheep. Poor fools sitting there so grimly when they could be out on their bikes, compulsory helmets on of course and tofu sammies in their backpacks.

I love the condescending pieties of the bourgoisie.

Do I detect the delicious aroma of fresh strawman stuffed with bullshit? There is a Your Views parody thread here for you to enjoy, you know.

Everyone knows that Hard News readers prefer Bridget.

Way too many exclamation marks and partner in crime with Cam Slater! Clearly the superior choice amongst weekend gossipmongers.

Having had the chance to collect my thoughts a bit: I suspect that, after the novelty wore off, we'd probably be similarly appalled with the social costs of a 24-hour central-city locoweed palace, should marijuana use ever become as routine and accepted as gambling is.

  • Hard News: The Casino,

Hmm. I'm personally in favour of less punitive drug laws, and of far more support for those who come to have an unhealthy dependence on drugs of any sort. Gambling is regulated by age already, so I'd say what's needed is that same increased support for abusers. It's not necessarily that inconsistent to find gambling distasteful and oppose overly punitive drug legislation.

I like to think I'd register the same level of disgust with the consequences of a late-stage P habit and those of an uncontrollable where-is-my-rent-gone gambling problem. Not disgust with the sufferers, mind, but with what is happening and where they're headed.
