  • OnPoint: Election 2011: GO!, in reply to recordari,

What a splendidly wonderful lunatic genius.

It was almost - ALMOST - as good as the Flaming Lips at the BDO (the standard by which all splendidly wonderful lunatic genius shows should be measured). As I said on FB, it was like "the Tom Tom Club and the Langley Schools Music Project playing imaginary retrofuturist spacecapade Simon and Garfunkel songs while dressed like Boney M and Parliament". (Except there wasn't that one guy in a nappy.)

A plunger shaped like the Sky Tower?

A plunger? A PLUNGER? I challenge you to a duel, sah!

If we somehow recognize each other, I’ll see you at Sufjan Stevens. Well, I’ll know you’re enjoying it too, at least. ;-)

How fucking awesome was THAT? Waaarghh!!!

(And I got to meet Geoff. Hooray!)

Try as I might, I can't top that one. (Whither Ian, dammit?)

Yes, she hates it when people badmouth imperia.

Sheez, yeah, remember the last guy who badmouthed imperia around here? I don't even want to talk about what I did to him. Let's just say it wasn't pretty.

  • Up Front: Giving Me Grief, in reply to Jackie Clark,

I have always believed that the grief we feel about the first person that we love who dies, melds and morphs into the grief we feel when the next person we love dies, and so on.

I don't quite know how this works, yet, but it sounds totally right.

Very sorry, Rex and Robert and Jack.

  • OnPoint: Election 2011: GO!, in reply to Matthew Poole,

C'mon, man. It's like calling me 'hysterical'. Which I don't advise, incidentally. ;)

Jack, no 'Almost Blue' in sad times! You will collapse in an inconsolable heap! 'It's almost touching, it will almost do.' Argh.

    embrace the cinematic melodrama

Which is weird, because I *like* melodrama. Plonk me in front of a Douglas Sirk and I'm as happy as Larry. And I LOVE musicals, so I have no beef with people randomly breaking into song, either. Tis a mystery, this Magnolia beef I have.

Oh dear, the secret's out: we sometimes make small talk. I bet if you po-facedly berate us some more, though, we'll magically start performing up to your expectations. That strategy *always* works.

(You, uh, see the other threads about terribly 'worthy' things like Egypt and the election and whatnot, right? Just checking.)

So, you’re here to endear yourself to one and all? Nice start.

  • Hard News: "Orderly transition" in #Egypt, in reply to Christiaan,

I just wish it would stop pretending the sun shines out of its principled ass.

The USA has such an amazing self-perpetuating propaganda machine. I think even the people who are in charge of DOING the horrible stuff believe the big lies (see The Fog of War, for example). They call that cognitive dissonance, I suppose.

  • OnPoint: Election 2011: GO!, in reply to Sacha,

Yes, same plot, same deus ex machina climax - but I love Altman's films (well, the ones I've seen: ongoing project. How can Fatso not have Nashville, FFS?) because he never gives the impression of forcing the issue. He's not so dreadfully portentous - he's often wacky and lighthearted, in fact. And his people mostly talk like they might be real human beings.
