OnPoint: Election 2011: GO!, in reply to
I am up for the Sufjan Stevens concert at the BMC on Monday night. Might see one or two or three of you there?
Me!
@Danielle. I am surprised--for someone with impeccable taste, you hate Magnolia? It is such a savagely sad movie.
You see that last sentence you wrote? Change one 's' into a 'b', and then we are in complete agreement. ;)
Here is an analogy which may explain why I hate that movie. You know when you go to a not-that-good hip hop show, and there's an annoying hypeman who's always loudly telling you to 'make some noooooooooooiiiiise!', even though nothing particularly noiseworthy has happened, and you're all 'how about I make some noise when you INSPIRE me to make some noise, asshole?' OK, well, PT Anderson is that hypeman, and he is telling me to 'feel saaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaad!', and I'm all 'but we shouldn't be at that part of the movie yet, and all your characters are currently thematic mouthpieces with no depth, can we develop them at all before I feel sad?' and he's all 'no! character development is for pussies! feel sad RIGHT NAO!' and I want to throttle him with his sweaty white hypeman towel of directorial wankerism.
Yeah. I fucking HATE that movie. :)

Yeah, I must say the 'mincing' was pretty dogwhistley, andin. Key's enough of a huge dork for us to mock without being all homophobe-esque about it.

There are others too.
Sure, but 'why I voted National' usually isn't one of them. Hence 'let us know if something is going on with you' might also be a useful bit of advice.
I believe that none of the people you are arguing most strongly with will be there, if that helps.
That's certainly true now, because it's been postponed. :)
How about when they all sing together? Surely you love that part?
You, Martin, are a little stirrer. I salute you! :) (Oh MAN, the singing. And the fucking FROGS. And that bed of stupid overdramatic soundtrack music FOR THE ENTIRE MOVIE. Hate hate hate!)

Oh no, argument death spiral!
I just want to say that there are lots of ways to get out of an argument – even with an Italian! – without it getting to this point on either side. (I’m still biding my time on revisiting an evolutionary psychology discussion, about which I think Giovanni is at least partially full of shit, until I finish reading Cordelia Fine’s Delusions of Gender. Just you wait, Tiso.) Make a joke. Make several. Say ‘I need to think about this some more.’ You have options.
Plus, if other stuff is going on in your life that makes this difficult, I think you would get a lot of support, but no one here is a mind reader: you might have to mention it before the spiral. Otherwise it’s just a WTF moment for most people, you know?
(Emma and Sacha are right: I am MUCH less argumentative in person, mainly because I’m terrible at thinking on my feet. Except to make dumb jokes.)
(Also: FUCK I hate Magnolia. I fucking HATE that movie SO MUCH. So much. Mutter, grumble.)

It’s the loneliest number that you’ll ever do.

True
Weird, because I think this is like the least-harsh place I've ever posted, unless you count the Facebook discussion threads under my kid's baby pictures. :)
So, Jack, it appears that most people had no idea that Ian left. I do admit that I did, and I also probably bitched about people 'flouncing' on Twitter, because it's a wee peeve of mine. So the heartless bastard count currently stands at one: me. I'll cop to it.
But I'm sure we do all agree that it's a shame and we hope he comes back, because we like him and I, at least, am terrible at puns.
-
You all just let him go without so much as a ‘oh, that’s a shame’.
I don’t think he announced it here, did he? It was on Chad Taylor’s blog during the whole plagiarism hoo-ha.
ETA At which announcement I was completely nonplussed. I thought it was just a disagreement over the nature of plagiarism, not a crisis point. But, as I'm sure we have established, I don't really know shit.

surely Danyl was taking the piss?
You think? I kinda didn't. Hey, Danyl, were you taking the piss?
I don’t recall him claiming to vote Tory
I do, because I was crushed that someone with such good taste in music was *totally wrong about everything else*. ;)

Heh. Block your ears, Simon!
(He JUST got all bitter about them on Twitter, Jack.)
