Lost your way, "Dot"?. You want Kiwiblog (do a U-turn and it's last on the right).

As every skoolboy know, history happens in luxury retreats. Bretton Woods. Gleneagles. Camp David. Versailles. Kyoto. Er, Dayton Ohio (OK, the Balkan folks missed out there). I've no idea who picked up the tab, being more interested in the decisions made and consequences thereof, but then I don't have the Herald's vision.

I wasn't around at the time, but I imagine when the rest of the world was reading about the fate of millions being decided in post-war Europe, the headlines in New Zealand would have been:

"Yalta: how much did it cost?"

Meaning of course, air fares, not lives.

(This just in: David Lange goes to Oxford on "junket").

there's too many for my liking that are just an excuse to socialize, get rip-roaring drunk, and then try not to vomit during your presentation the next morning.

Orgy on Taxes! Pictures at Six!

(note to editors: any old suits-with-drinks conference file footage will do.)

  • Island Life: Ice-cold rabble rousing,

National leader John Key said he agreed with Miss Clark and it was unacceptable that no one was held accountable.

"I find it repugnant that two young New Zealanders are dead and no one is being held accountable for that and I am pleased police have said they will. . . have a look at information."

Mr Key said Miss Clark's comments reflected the frustration of most New Zealanders.

He said if the delay in questioning family had affected the conviction then it was wrong but Mr Key would not be drawn into criticising police.

Asked whether the double jeopardy law should be changed, Mr Key said that was something that could be looked at.

So how will Winston (or Ron Mark) trump them both? "Defence Lawyers must be scrapped ... it's PC gone mad"?

  • OnPoint: Colby Blues,

    More on Mugabe.

House debate on Electoral Finance Bill, July 26, 2007:

Hon BILL ENGLISH: This is straight out of Zimbabwe. In fact, if members read the rules of the former Soviet Union about election campaigning, they will see that those rules were less restrictive than these ones.

    John Carter: Mugabe wrote them.

Hon BILL ENGLISH: Mugabe would be proud of this. He cuts out the middle man; he just locks them up.

Too much pork. Where's the beef? It's peanuts. Jam tomorrow. Dividing up the cake. Lolly scramble. Toast.

  • Hard News: The Secret Code,

Does anyone remember the Kahui twins? How about the Muliaga/Mercury tragedy? Or the deaths of teenagers at a Christchurch party?

You might recall that each of them dominated our news coverage for days, each one giving rise to What Have We Become national navel-gazing. They were huger than huge.

All three had a sequel in various courts yesterday. The stories continue, and in public. Now you might think that stories which were so important then, would still be worth our attention now. But none mattered more than Goff's comments, according to the 6pm bulletins on TV One and Three.

    Shame.

It's useful to see the numbers. Next (obvious) question: what if there are no numbers? Does that mean no cost?

On "Campbell Live" John Key promised to "pour money" into education.

Speaking to farmers, John Key promised to "pour money" into research and development. Here's the story:

    http://www.country-wide.co.nz/article/8577.html

What is one "pour money" plus one "pour money"? How do you add them up and make a nice graphic for your readers?

Key has been making these kinds of promises for 18 months now. The absence of dollar signs and details doesn't let him off the hook.

But then I doubt the Herald wants him on it.

On second thoughts, perhaps I overestimated Key's foresight:

    Sunday Star-Times, March 23:

"Next up is the rail system, which Cullen is negotiating to buy back into government ownership. When asked by the Sunday Star-Times where National stands on the issue, Key repeatedly said he didn't believe the sale would go through. But he says if it does happen, his finance spokesman Bill English has made it clear National would sell off rail again."
