  • Hard News: A revolting piece of shit,

    sorry about the shiftiness there. Surely Scribe would call 911 first, no?

  • Hard News: A revolting piece of shit,

    Sorry Sacha, I've changed it back to something resembling it's former self, "if there are any repercussions from this comment, I'll knock you out before you even come up my driveway. " obviously not

  • Hard News: A revolting piece of shit,

    Was a threat issued by Dirty Sesh? You're joking with that last line aren't you Sacha? Will Blur and Oasis be involved?

  • Hard News: A revolting piece of shit,

    Which casts a slightly different light on the comment.

    Certainly different, but I'm still at a loss Russell, he has small children in his house, so if there are hypothetical repercussions from making the comment;

    "I'd knock that guy out before he even came up my driveway"

    then he will knock the guy out.
    before he comes up his driveway, ie. anywhere.

    It sounds like the threats of violence are pretty one sided. Question is, is he setting a better example for his violence validating small children than a music video depicting violence?

    This wouldn't be the same Scribe that had an alcohol fueled episode at a party a few years back (which vanished off the internet), who first came to fame on P-Money's Big Things album of 1993? Maybe the system just sent Dirty Sesh the wrong message.

    It's still not ok.

  • Hard News: A revolting piece of shit,

    holding a mirror up to society highlighting violence...Defend his right to make artistic statements however he sees fit instead of hanging him out to dry with a weak apology.

    I'd say NZ is a little too conservative to ground this kind of argument Robbie. To contextualize, both 'Hostel 2' and 'Run! Bitch run!" were banned in New Zealand. So I assume then that there's very little precedent on which to base an argument in support of this work if the establishment just can't recognize the artistic merit of the entire genre.

    Moreso, outside of the cultural context which accepts these kinds of films, the video would lack cultural relevance to the general viewing audience.

    unlike some others (the clip is embedded at that link), I'm not inclined to blame NZ On Air for this. I don't think it's practical or desirable to have a government agency dictating content in advance for a $5000 video grant.

    I posted the likelihood of this kind of scenario elsewhere, a few years back, While I agree it would be impractical to have a government agency dictating content in advance, I don't see anything impractical about first requiring the artists to provide some kind of video concept before bequeathing $5000 to make a video. That would at least make a modicum of sense. Guilt by willfully ignorant association

    Sacha, you omitted this telling section from your Scribe quote;

    Asked if he was worried about repercussions from his comments, Scribe said: "I'd knock that guy out before he even came up my driveway, if it came down to that kind of thing."

    A real threat of violence carried by the country's mainstream media, in response to video mock up (which obviously must have been very well made to stir up this kind of reaction) does illustrate the kind of hypocrisy Robbie touches on.

    leading on to

    Anti-violence groups called last weekend for the taxpayer-funded video to be banned from television,

    Does seem to be some confusion here. "Anti-violence/knock the guy out?".

    I haven't seen the video in question, but I'm interested as to how much of a thematic departure it is from Justice's 'Stress'.

    Paul, might be discipline-related. Your arguments in favour of epistemic rupture in the Enlightenment leading to revolutionary change were very common in, say, English literary history about 15-20 years ago.

    A beautifully written post Caleb, as relevant to 'The Enlightenment' as 'The Renaissance' or any of the other renaissances. Although it would make a nice companion piece, I wouldn't think to trouble you to re-post with the substitution.

    I think he underestimates the developments of the Renaissance

    History by Dots

    The Man sits for 12 hours on a beach watching the surf roll in, when asked at the end of the session what he had seen over the course of the day, he describes the biggest wave at the high tide mark in painstaking detail, the rest but a blur.

    He sits a further 12 hours, again asked, again giving a similar answer, elaborating, proffering connections between the biggest wave of the second high tide mark and its predecessor 12 hours earlier. The countless intervening waves are but an inconvenience to a theory.

    Paul, the Polo family (representing the builders of the silk road) called, they want you to return their rightful place in history.

    In later life, Leonardo only recorded two childhood incidents. One, which he regarded as an omen, was when a kite dropped from the sky and hovered over his cradle, its tail feathers brushing his face
