Or a journalist. Or plain aware of more than your own self ? This one is wider than Eden Park: it's about a selfish malaise of self-obsession in our society, and the sometimes lifetime consequences of that self-justification for the individual people affected.

You are down south yes? A frost-free spot? I have increasingly been wondering what growing conditions are like around the coast north of Dunedin; there are some fine-looking north-facing sheltered places. I like gardening and Chch is getting tiresome in many ways...or maybe it's third-year syndrome.

Pupdate: Nina today: eight and a half days old and a bellyful of milk. Those paws with their micro-claws are 5mm across. She has a suck like a Dyson and a ferocious will to live. Winston will come later: he's not wanting prime-time yet.

That is so silly and funny: it reminds me of the old coot in Dad's Army and his "they don't like cold steel up them". All kinds of objects I could put on a pole (rather than a pike). A good laugh on a day when one is sorely needed: thanks.

Oh good. I'm not going soft in the head. I agreed with some of Parker's closing comments on Campbell Live tonight. Edited to: Snap Sacha for the rest...Marryatt knew about the letter and didn't tell councillors ...

but Parker said the real issue was improving the consent process
Interesting. I would have thought Parker as mayor would have been breathing fire over such a massive failure of council employees to notify elected reps of a letter containing such a threat, no matter who stuffed up in not telling who.
The questions are: did Parker know? If so, why did he not inform Sue Wells as chair of the relevant committee and the rest of the councillors?
Did Tony Maryatt know of the letter? If not, why not? If he did, why did he not tell the mayor, and the councillors?
