Yes, Paul, I wasn't meaning to suggest that your reasons weren't sound.

Just this constant refrain in NZ of "I'm going to Australia because ..." so often ends in an illogical comment on the state of our politics.

Weather and wages are fair enough, though. And food. And big city culture. And wildlife. And sport. And ...

Hell, I'm off to the airport. Bloody Clark.

  • Hard News: A thing that rarely ends well,

certainly not NSW where there is endemic corruption

Sometimes it seems the basic requirement for migrating to Australia is not to know - and above all, not to want to know - about the political culture that people are heading for. NZ is squeaky clean by comparison.

If Australia is the solution, Helengrad is not the problem.

I don't hate John Key. But I do despair at the media's treatment of him. I have had interviews for dead-end part-time jobs that were more searching than anything our "next Prime Minister" has had to undergo.

Today in Parliament, John Key called for a Nanny State. For more government interference. For dictatorial Helen Clark to do the very things she's accused of.

He didn't put it like that, of course, And I doubt that any reporters or (God help us) "commentators" will do so either. But in fact, he used Question Time to ask the Prime Minister why a man had been let out on bail, and wanted to know what she was going to do about the police and judiciary who let this happen. (Nothing, was her answer, as it should be).

He'll get his headline. The medals and the reward are a story, and he's smart enough to ride it. A soundbite on TV is all he needs.

I'd like to think the media were smart enough to see through the stunt, the irony, the nonsense - and to point it out. But I'm not getting my hopes up.

  • Hard News: There's Always One,

It's now being reported that the hi-jacker wanted the plane to fly to Australia.

    Cullen to blame, says Key.

Witness: Airport drama 'like a Bruce Willis movie'

I suppose being stuck at the airport would feel like a tedious waste of time and money.

  • Hard News: The Daily Embarrassment,

Would it be unkind to note here that Sir Tony O'Reilly was knighted by Tony Blair (sorry, Her Majesty), and that O'Reilly owned various media which might have influenced public opinion about Blair's government?

Perhaps the NZ Herald would like to launch one of its famous campaigns, on how the honours system rewards the rich and influential? (Just run it by the proprietor first ...)

    Presuming he's heard both versions

If you believe the Dom-Post (or Key) he didn't actually listen to the DVD before urging the rest of the country to.
