  • Hard News: The fake news problem, in reply to Kumara Republic,

How feasible would it be to fight misinformation with misinformation?

"I learned long ago, never to wrestle with a pig. You get dirty, and besides, the pig likes it." - George Bernard Shaw

Leaving that aside, it's hard to see what misinformation would actually be effective. The actual easily verifiable things that Trump said and did had more or less zero effect where it counted. Mexicans are all rapists? Deport all muslims? Bankrupt multiple times, and rips off small businesses? Essentially zero cut-through.

Where do you go from there? Photoshop him eating a baby?

A bit pedantic of me, but I've read at least one account of people voting for Trump because Obama invaded Iraq (and therefore created the mess).

A President of the USA was elected not so long ago, pretty much on a platform of waging massive full scale war on a country on completely made up pretexts.

Can you clarify who you're talking about here?

Because Bush 1 was inaugurated in 1989, and had been in power for nearly two years when Saddam Hussein invaded Kuwait in August 1990 and kicked off GW1, and Bush 2 won his election in November 2000, nearly a year before 9/11, and a few years before the 2003 Iraq War (which was before the subsequent 2004 election)

    How revealing.

    Of what?

That you're nuttier than squirrel shit.

Fact fuel can't melt tinfoil beams!

My issue with that Jonathan Pie vid (and similar analysis) is essentially
    this.

It's kind of like blaming the victim of assault for walking into the wrong bar and 'looking at someone funny'.

There's a slightly more nuanced look at communication issues here.

Trump's framing appealed to the gut-instincts of rust-belt voters

It was also impossible for Clinton to push back against, since Bill Clinton signed the NAFTA agreement into force in Dec 1993, and Hiillary repeatedly spoke in favour of it from 1996 until 2007 (when she was setting up for a 2008 White House bid).

You would listen to a"denier,” and try to see his point of view?

It depends. Would you discuss the finer points of chemotherapy with someone who denies that smoking gives you cancer?

Why do you claim these values for the left?

    original quote

the core values and concerns of the contemporary left

Operative word: 'the'. As in, the only thing the left cares about is identity politics.

I am pointing out that that is horseshit.

And since you brought it up, Trump has claimed that global warming is a Chinese hoax, has said he will cancel the Paris climate change deal, and has just appointed a climate change denier as the head of the EPA.

You might need to explain to me how a 'denier' can 'hold those values'.

see another election like that which is more favourable to the core values and concerns of the contemporary left

...and then Bernie lost the primary. And no-one ever talked about 'contemporary left values' such as income inequality or the environment ever again.
