Funnily enough, this is in an environment where the teacher as orchestra conductor is turned on it's head to teacher as another player in the band.
This is how we are being trained at Waikato Uni (Graduate Diploma Teaching (Secondary).
Unfortunately the reality in the classroom doesn't always bear this out... not because of the students or teachers but because of other issues such as time, resources, lack of quality professional development, class sizes.... we always try out best though!!
As a teacher, when you do run a unit in this way, or even an individual lesson, the difference is truly exciting. Actively engaging the students in meaningful learning gives me a real buzz. The students notice the difference too - their eyes just light up.

whoops....
meant to say that i agreed with your comments regarding the music awards.
I only watched long enough to see the surfer and snowboarder present a few awards. It was like watching paint dry. Stilited, boring - absolutely no chemistry between the 2

also as a parent....
i think it is really important that you instill a love of learning
in your children right from the start.
it will stand them in good stead -
Just a quick note from a trainee teacher (Secondary)
totally endorse 81st column and Barts posts
I think we as teachers are there to ensure that students can
learn and think
even outside of class!!

Some of this problem would be alleviated by more fulfilling primary/secondary education; a problem that has it's origins in class sizes.
Recent negotiations with teachers (when the govt tried to back out of changes that had already been promised earlier) said only something about schools having to 'endeavour' to have maximum class sizes. The government has, however, not provided any funding for this to happen.

I am surprised that you are having trouble with the subway/metro. I was there for a couple of weeks in July/August and thought it was really easy user-friendly system (Idon't speak or read a word of Japanese).
I recommend the museum at Meiji University - nice and small (so not too time consuming) but has some amazing exhibits and English-speaking guide if required (free). It has a section on criminology, arts and crafts (like laquer bowls, textiles etc) and archeology. Worth a visit. Also if you head out to Hakone region i highly recommend the Open-Air Art Museum and buying the 'Hakone Free-Pass' which means you can use all/any transport as many times as you like in the park area (bus, train, gondola, cablecars etc).
