  • Hard News: The Secret Code,

The key part of the interview is here on YouTube. One does tend to wonder at the fuss...

Thanks for the clip Russell, it's the same one as shown on Breakfast on TV1 this morning. Which left me dumbfounded. Oliver Driver is so clearly laying out a hypothetical question and he even qualifies it by telling Goff he knows the political answer already ... so it is to Goff's credit that he doesn't try to wriggle out of it by just giving the political answer anyway (albeit he does stress some qualifications of his own when answering).

So I'm very PISSED OFF (hence the bold caps!) with the MSM for what really is a genuine and obvious example of a media beat up. What also (especially!) pisses me off is that if we are to ever get meaningful answers from our politicians we can't invite them to 'be frank' and then jump all over them when they do. Is it any wonder politicians have become evasive when asked a direct question?

If anyone has a transcript can we post that somewhere too so (in addition to the video) we can all savour the actual words used by both interviewer and interviewee -- and try to marry those with the MSM clamour to construe it as a leadership-coup-in-the-making. It's BS.

I'd have to dig through my audio archives from my RDU days but I'm pretty sure I've got John Key on record saying something along the lines of "I'm not interested in taking the leadership from Don Brash right now but if that opportunity came up and Don decided to step down..."

No need to look because we all know Key would have said exactly that to the MSM at some stage.

  • Hard News: Shooting for the Moon,

    How about this?

heh heh - that's exactly what I was thinking of!

TCNZ is a privately-owned company ... - that makes it difficult to have them easily (and cheapily) give up assets simply because the NZ public would like them in their hands, thankyou very much.

I had to laugh the other day. Some old coot in the pub kept blathering on about how the NZ public once owned the phone company, before the Government sold it last century. Us young folk didn't know where to look, it was embarrassing, his brain was obviously rotted by the alcohol. Why would you sell a monopoly phone company? That would be like selling the roads, or rail! They'll be selling the airports and Air NZ next ...

  • Hard News: Shooting for the Moon,

I would suggest that any government look at overhead cables where possible

And this is nowhere nere as bad as what I saw on my last trip to Asia...

  • Indiana Jonesing,

    the phenomenon in Portland

Obama has succeeded because American's want 'change' ie change from politics-as-usual. They always do, having previously rallied behind (to a lesser extent) Ralph Nader and (more successfully) Ross Perot. (Bob Jones found similar favour with the NZ electorate). But voters have learnt the two major parties are too strong and an independent will never win, so Obama is percieved as the next best thing. McCain also tries to win over some of that 'plain folks' vote with his 'straight talk' persona. The rally in Portland is heartening, but who knows what will happen by November. McCain (ie the RNC/Fox) could still pull something out of the bag. Especially if there is another 'terror incident' (a real one, not just the bogus threat of one).

  • Island Life: A pig this good you don't…,

it appears the Herald has adopted an all-new definition of pork, encompassing all government spending

Yes, which is such a shame. Pork Barrel Politics is (as Slack points out) when you feather the nests of your constituents to ensure you recieve their vote. Fast tracking a new Kopu Bridge would be one such example. I await to see which party announces that first (probably the first Tuesday after Labour Weekend).

Even blind Freddy can see that John Key will probably be in government by Christmas

It's weird, but in the past week that thought seems to now be de riguer in the NZ media. Previously it's been said more with a question mark, but now it's expressed as a given. I wonder if it has anything to do with the NZ media following on from the US media, who have pretty much agreed Hillary is toast.

  • Random Play: Whistle while you work,

The same, I suppose could be said for this, which was a huge hit when I was about four:

Book me a spot on Beat The Geeks (or just call me old). I knew that tune was from a movie:

    Only When I Larf (1968)

This is an enjoyable, tongue-in-cheek glossy sixties romp whereby a couple of conmen and their girlfriend attempt to keep ahead of their 'marks' with mixed results.

A love-triangle develops as the young protege tries to take over the business and steal his old mentor's girlfriend. Inevitably they get under each others feet and start feuding and distrusting one another. As a result, the ending contains a good twist.

The direction is upbeat and enthusiastic, bright and brisk. The locations are shot well, and its accompanied by a catchy whistled theme tune throughout.

  • Random Play: Whistle while you work,

We live in a culture which extolls the virtues of youth, when Baby Boomers refuse to grow old (mea culpa me too perhaps?) and when people Botox and Pilate and do anything to offset the inevitable attritions of age.

Could we not put Ronnie in a Hoodie, give him a beatbox backing track, and maybe some vocals from 'the Streets'?

Most of the problems with the youth of today are caused by boredom. If we can just get the kids whistling they'll always have something to do. We could have Whistling Competitions, where the kids could join teams and have whistle-off's ... instead of Youth Gangs fighting eachother they could just Whistle For It!
